Q: How did you come up with the idea? A: Well I was in the pub with some mates. They had recently graduated and were moving out of their student housing. They had loads of stuff to get rid of. It just came to me – a student auction website. Q: …and so was born ‘Unilot’? A: Yeah, it’s aimed 100% at students. The idea was students have a lot of stuff at the end of term, and just end up throwing away. We decided to set up a website for students to sell stuff to each other within their uni. Q: You’re in your final year – how do you find the time? A: It took an entire summer holiday to set up. Now it’s running it takes up less time but I probably spend about two hours a day on it – fixing technical problems, answering emails… you just find the time! Q: What sort or stuff do you sell? A: Anything really! We’ve got about 300 registered users at the moment, and we’re hoping to get a lot bigger. We’ve had lots of books, mobile phones - we even had someone attempting to sell their girlfriend! It’s identical to Ebay really except it’s for students and we don’t have any fees. People can meet up face to face to exchange goods, which avoids online transactions. It doesn’t cost you anything to actually register or sell stuff. Q: How do you make money? A: We hope when it becomes more popular we’ll be able to charge for a small amount of advertising on the website. At the moment we don’t make money, we see ourselves as more of a free service for students. Q: What’s in it for you? A: It’s great experience and looks good on a CV. Q: So it will help you make money in the future? A: It’s a good start. I’ve learnt a lot from the business; how to become a limited company, liabilities, profit loss - it’s a learning curve, you pick it up as you go along. Q: Would you like to own your own business after you graduate? A: I would love to. I think that being you own boss is probably the greatest career choice you could ever make. You work from home, have your own hours and pay yourself your own money. |
