Introduction

Method is a way of doing something. There are some verbs that we often use with 'method'. We call these combinations collocations. Learn some of them here with Phil.

Common collocations with 'method'

devise a method
develop a method
work out a method
This means think of and create a way of doing something.

  • It's taken a long time, but I've developed a method that helps improve my listening in Japanese. I came up with it myself after spending a long time workingout the best method.

follow a method
employ a method
adopt a method
If you follow, employ or adopt a method, you use someone else's method for yourself.

  • I watched a video online about how to remember vocabulary, and I'm now following that method to help me learn English.

a method involves something
If a method involves something, it means there are different parts to the method.

  • My method of cooking bacon involves putting it in the oven for a very long time!

So, you want a way to learn words? You probably need a method. Let's learn verbs to use with method.
 
A method is how you do something. Why not spend some time to devise a method, develop a method or work out a method?
 
Paula's working out a method to learn new words. She wants to develop a method that works for her. It takes a lot of thought to devise an effective method.
 
If you already have one, you can follow that method or employ that method. That means use that method. Adopt a method means to start using one.
 
Paula's going to adopt a new study method. She was following a method that her teacher suggested, but now she wants to employ her own one.
 
Success is when a method works. To help other people adopt it, describe it – say what your method involves.
 
Paula's methodinvolves revising new words many times. She knows this methodworks.
