Before we listen to the BBC Radio 4 news item on the topic, we have a quiz question based on research findings published by The Go Group - ከሚከተሉት ሶስት ነገሮች መካከል ሰዎች ስለእርስዎ የሚፈጥርባቸው የመጀመሪያ ስሜት ላይ ተፅዕኖ የሚፈጥረው የትኛው ነው?

I don’t care. That’s the first thing I notice.

But, Kee, didn’t you hear the news the other day from Princeton University?

The moment we see a photograph of someone, we can make an instant judgement about them.  But that doesn’t mean these first impressions are right, of course. A Professor from Princeton University in the U.S. has spent many years studying first impressions from faces and says there's no solid evidence that these judgements are correct about the character of the person.

See? That study says that you shouldn’t judge a person immediately when you first meet them…

Kee
Look, I know that’s what they say, but I can’t help it.

Sam
So, you always make an instant or snap judgement when you first meet new people, do you?

‘An instant judgement’ ወይንም ‘snap judgement’ አንድን ሰው ገና ከማግኘትዎ ስለሰውየው ወይንም ስሴትዮዋ የሚኖርዎት አስተያየት ማለት ነው። Did you make a snap judgment of me when you first met me?

Yes, of course, I did. My snap judgment was that you had a strong handshake and I thought you were very confident. Not like Sam!

But, Kee, how can someone’s handshake really tell you anything about them? I think the old expression is true: ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’.

I agree Sam! ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ መጽሐፍን በሽፋኑ ብቻ አትመዝኑት ማለት ሲሆን፥ ብዙ ጊዜ ግን ሰዎች ይህንን ያደርጋሉ። ስለዚህ ካወራን አይቀር ቀደም ሲል ያቀርብንልዎትን ሰዎች ስለእርስዎ የሚፈጥርባቸውን የመጀመሪያ ስሜት የተመለከት ጥያቄ ያስታውሳሉ። መልሱ ለ) በምን ያህል ፍጥነት ፈገግ ይላሉ የሚለው ነው። በፍጥነት ፈገግ የሚሉ ከሆነ ሃቀኛ እንዳልሆኑ ለሰዎች ሊሰማቸው ይችላል ይባላል፤ በዝግታ ፈገግ ካሉ ግን ይህ እውነተኛነትን ይጠቁማል።

Don’t judge a book by its cover is for people who don’t trust their instincts! I’m always right when I first meet someone.

Sam
Maybe not, Kee. The study says that first impressions are NOT a good way of judging someone’s character.

You really need to get to know someone before you can learn about their character, you know, know who they really are.

Yeah, but the few times I told myself to keep an open mind, my instincts ended up being right.

‘Keep an open mind’ አዕምሮን ለተለያዩ አስተሳሰቦች ክፍት ማድረግ ማለት ነው።. It’s always important to keep an open mind, I think.

Look, I tried to keep an open mind when I first met you because I knew we would be working together…

Sam
…And?

የዛሬውን ዝግጅታችንን አጠናቅቀን ከመሰናበታችን በፊት፥ ስናወራባቸው የቆየናቸውን ቃላት አንዴ እንመልከት፤ ሁሉም አዳዲስ ሰዎችን ከማግኘት ጋር የተያያዙ ናቸው። ‘An instant or snap judgement’፤ አንድን ሰው ገና ከማግኘታችን ስለእርሱ ወይንም ስለእርሷ የምናሳልፈው ብያኔ ሲሆን ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’፤ ደግሞ በፍጥነት ፍርድን ማሳለፍ እንደሌለብን የሚያስረዳ አባባል ነው፤ ‘character’, የአንድን ሰው ስብዕና የሚያዋቅሩ ባህርያት እና ‘to keep an open mind’ ለተለያዩ አስተያየቶች አዕምሮን ክፍት ማድረግ የሚል ትርጉም አላቸው።
