હેલ્લો એન્ડ Welcome to English Together! આજે આપણે વાત કરીશું વિડિયો ગેમ્સ્ વિશે.આપણે બધાએ નાનપણમાં વિડિયો ગેમ્સની મૌજ માણી છે. મિત્રો, તમને જાણીને નવાઈ લાગશે કે ‘Minecraft’ નામનું વિડિયો ગેમ કે 10 વર્ષ પહેલાં લોંચ થયું હતું, તે આજે પણ એટલું જ લોકપ્રિયતા ધરાવે છે. બીબીસી દ્વારા હાલમાં જ વિડિયો ગેમ ઉપર એક ખાસ લેખ કરવામાં આવ્યો, જેમાં એ જણાવવામાં આવ્યું કે કઈ રીતે ‘Minecraft’ પ્રતિસ્પર્ધીઓ સામે ટકી રહેવા માટે સતત પ્રયાસ કરી રહ્યું છે. મિત્રો, સેમ અને રોય ‘Minecraft’ ગેમ, બીબીસીનાં લેખ અને વિડિયો ગેમ વિશે ચર્ચા કરી રહ્યાં છે. બન્ને એ પણ જાણવાનો પ્રયાસ કરી રહ્યાં છે કે લોકો શા માટે વિડિયો ગેમ રમે છે. ચર્ચા દરમ્યાન બન્ને ‘blended words’ એટલે કે બે શબ્દોને જોડીને બનતાં શબ્દ વિશે પણ વાત કરી રહ્યાં છે.

I’m not sure, but I’ve recently started playing Minecraft after my best friend introduced me to it. I’m really enjoying it. It’s10 years old, and I can’t believe that I hadn’t played it before. What’s your favourite game?

Sam
I love Pokémon.  It’s a great game. Not many people know the word Pokémon is a combination of two words: pocket monsters. A great example of a blended word. 

Roy
Video games like Pokémon and Minecraft have become huge and important parts of our culture. There are players from all around the world, and many people write fanzines about them.

Sam
Yes, the word fanzine is a combination of fan and magazine, and it’s a non-professional magazine written by fans of the game.  So, why do you love video games?

Roy
I enjoy the sense of completing something, and exploring new worlds. I think it also helps me to chill out and relax, or chillax as you can say. A scientist called Nick Yee said there are three motivations for playing video games: achievement, socialising and immersion.

Roy
Yes, I read that. Achievement means you have a feeling of finishing or completing something. It’s social as you can meet people online and work together.

Sam
I agree that you can escape, but I also like collecting things. A scientist called Nick Yee said there are three motivations for playing video games: achievement, socialising and immersion.

Yes, some people get so involved that they take holidays or vacations, where they stay at home, or staycations, to play them.

ચર્ચા દરમ્યાન સેમ અને રોયએ ચાર ‘blended words’ નો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. દાખલાં તરીકે ‘Pokemon’ જે ‘pocket’ અને ‘monster’ થી બન્યું છે. ‘Pocket’ એટલે ખીસું અને ‘monster’ એટલે દૈત્ય. બીજો શબ્દ છે ‘Fanzine’ જે ‘fan’ અને  ‘magazine’ ને જોડીને બને છે. મિત્રો, ‘fan’ નો ગુજરાતીમાં અર્થ થાય છે પ્રશંસક અને  ‘magazine’ સામાયિક. ત્રીજો શબ્દ છે ‘chillax’  જે  ‘chill’ અને ‘relax’ થી બન્યું છે. ‘Chill’ એટલે ઠંડું થવું અને ‘relax’ એટલે આરામ કરવું. ચોથો શબ્દ છે ‘staycation’ જે બન્યું ‘stay at home’ અને ‘ vacation’ થી. ‘Stay at home’ નો અર્થ થાય છે ઘરે રહેવું અને ‘vacation’ એટલે રજાઓ. મિત્રો, હવે ચર્ચામાં ફરીએ.

People think video games are not very social. They imagine people sitting alone in their rooms, and not speaking with anyone. But, actually you can make friends online.

Sam
Yes, of course. You can join groups, chat and work together. You can even learn things -some games are both educational and entertaining.

Roy
Also known as edutainment. You can even bring your interests in video games in to the real world and meet people. People attend events and dress in the costumes of their favourite characters. It’s called cosplay.

Sam
It’s amazing you can meet people from all over the world on your computers. Some games allow you to work together in groups, to all help each other.

Roy
There are stories of romances and friendships starting from meeting in games. You must always take care, and be careful about the people you meet, but you can always say hello and send them an emoticon.Emoticons are those smiley faces you see in texts.

Sam
Yes, who knows who you might meet the next time you send a smiley face.

મિત્રો, આજે સેમ અને રોયએ બીજો ‘blended words’ વિશે પણ જણાવ્યું. જે છે ‘edutainment’ જે ‘education’ અને ‘entertainment’ થી બન્યો છે. ‘Education’ એટલે શિક્ષણ અને ‘entertainment’ નો અર્થ થાય છે મનોરંજન. ‘Cosplay’જે ‘costume’ અને ‘play’ થી બન્યો છે. ‘Costume’ એટલે વેશભૂષા અને ‘play’ એટલે રમત અને ત્રીજો શબ્દ છે ‘emoticon’ જે ‘emotion’ અને ‘icon’ થી બન્યો છે. ‘Emotion’ એટલે સંવેદના અને ‘icon’ એટલે આદર્શ.
