Uh, no, you can have it if you want!

You know, in a lot of places it would be considered impolite to eat someone else’s leftover food! Leftover  એટલે જમ્યા પછી વધેલું ભોજન.

Tom
Why? There’s nothing wrong with eating leftovers.

Phil
Why don’t you just buy your own sandwich!

Tom
Because, Phil, there’s perfectly good food here and you’re just going to waste it!

મિત્રો, આજનો પ્રશ્ન પણ ભોજન સાથે સંલગ્ન છે. United Nations ના Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) મુજબ વિશ્વના કુલ ભોજન ઉત્પાદનમાંથી કેટલું ટકા ભોજન દરવર્ષે ખરાબ અથવા ચોરી થઈ જાય છે?

Well, Phil, you were just about to throw away your leftover sandwich!

‘Throw away’ એટલે ફેંકી દેવું. Why throw it away when Tom could eat it?  મિત્રો, હવે તમે BBC Radio Wales દ્વારા કરવામાં આવેલા ન્યૂઝ સાંભળો જેમાં સ્માર્ટફોન એપ્પ વિશે વાત કરવામાં આવી છે. એપ્પ થકી લોકો વધેલા ભોજનને બીજા લોકોને નિઃશુલ્ક વહેંચીને રીસાઇકલ કરી રહ્યા છે.

Now a new smartphone app has launched in Cardiff which basically allows you to share any spare food. You take a picture of your unwanted grub, you upload it to the app and people then can decide if they want it or not. But would you eat a stranger's leftovers? Our reporter Llinos Pritchard has been asking some of Radio Wales' listeners in Bangor.

Would you yourself be prepared to share your leftover food with your neighbor?

Yeah definitely, if you know your neighbour, and you know where it's coming from.

Tom
So, you see Phil, you don’t need to throw away your leftovers!

Phil
Maybe. It seems a bit unhygienic to me,  eat  somebody else’s leftovers.

‘Unhygienic’ એટલે અસ્વચ્છ. બીજો અર્થ થાય છે બિન-આરોગ્યપ્રદ. But they said that with the app you can see where your food comes from.

Phil
Well, that doesn’t mean it’s hygienic! I don’t know how my neighbours cook, so how can I trust their hygiene?

Tom
Oh Phil! Don’t be so sensitive! My point is that food is a valuable resource that shouldn’t be wasted. I think we need to create a more sustainable way of eating.

Right!  ‘Sustainable’ નો ગુજરાતીમાં અર્થ થાય છે લાંબા સમય સુધી ચાલનાર. ભારતમાં વધેલા ભોજનમાંથી ખાતર બનાવવામાં આવે છે. ધણી હૉટેલો દ્વારા વધેલું ભોજન જરૂરીયાતમંદોને વહેંચી દેવામાં આવે છે.

Well, I’m sure most people would agree that it’s unsustainable to produce more than we need. We do live in a throwaway society, though!

Tom
You know, I actually agree, Phil! And, a note for our listeners. The action, to throw away, can also be used as a describing word, and the describing word is pronounced ‘throwaway’. So the action is ‘to throw away’ and the describing word is ‘throwaway’.

Thanks Tom. જે વસ્તુઓ સહેલાઈથી ફેંકી દેવામાં આવે તેના માટે અંગ્રેજીમાં ‘throw away’ શબ્દનો ઉપયોગમાં કરવામાં આવે છે. Finding ways to recycle throwaway food can definitely help sustain our eating habits! Which is exactly what the app is trying to do, right?!

Exactly! Having  extra food is something we can capitalise on!

‘To capitalise on’ એટલે તકનો લાભ લેવો. આ સાથે હું તમને આજના પ્રશ્નનો જવાબ જણાવું. સર્વેક્ષણ મુજબ વિશ્વમાં 30%  ભોજન બરબાદ થઈ જાય છે.

Wow! Goodness! It’s so wasteful to squander a resource like that. That is so much food!

‘To squander’ નો ગુજરાતીમાં અર્થ થાય છે અવિચારી અને અયોગ્ય રીતે સંસાધનો બરબાદ કરવું. It’s definitely annoying when people squander. In India, squandering of food grains is common at government storage depots.

Phil
You know what else is annoying?

Tom
What?

Phil
People pretending that they’re capitalising on extra food, when really, they are just too mean to buy their own sandwich!

Tom
Oh Phil! I already told you, it’s called sustainable eating! If you’re not going to eat the sandwich then I will eat it.

Phil
You’re unbelievable, Tom!
