મિત્રો, આજે વાત કરશું દરિયા વિશે. ચર્ચા શરૂ કરીએ એક પ્રશ્ન સાથે. National Geographic મુજબ દરિયામાં વિશ્વનું કેટલા ટકા પાણી છે?

અ) 57%
બ) 77%
ક) 97%

પ્રશ્ન અંગે તમારો શું માનવું છે ફિલ?

I’m going to go for b)  - the sea’s big, but 97% sounds very high.

Sam
No, I think 97% sounds about right… so I’ll go for c)

Phil
Hmm… but that’s almost all the water in the world… if it was almost all the water, I’m sure we’d pay more attention to it.

…Firstly, I think it's just important to recognise the many hidden ways in which the sea affects our lives, everything from our weather and climate, which is hugely  dominated by the sea 93% of all excess heat absorbed by the earth is in the ocean somewhere, climate change is really an ocean problem on the long term, right through to the fact that 95% of all our trade comes from the sea, 95% of all our internet traffic is by submarine fibre-optic cable, so there's a whole raft of these things that are unseen.

તો પ્રોફેસર જણાવી રહ્યાં છે કે આપણે દરિયા બાબતે ગંભીર નથી.

The sea’s great… I love to go and lie on a beach, but that’s the only time I really think about it – it’s just a great place for a holiday. 

Sam
Is that really the only time you think about it? 

Phil
Yeah… I hope they keep it clean so that I can swim in it!

Sam
Were you not listening to the professor just then? The sea is so important for so many other reasons. It moderates the world’s climate. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
‘Moderates’ એટલે સમતોલ કરવું. So if the sea is moderating our climate it affects us every day.

Sam
So maybe you should be thinking about the sea every day! 

Phil
Look, I live in England, I try to ignore the climate as much as I can… that’s why I can’t wait to go on holiday somewhere warm and lie by the sea. 

Sam
But it’s not just the climate and weather that the sea is important for… think about how much of the things you buy are imports – and most of them come on ships – so the sea is vital to international commerce.

‘Commerce’ ને ગુજરાતીમાં કહીશું વાણિજ્ય. બહારના દેશોથી મોટા ઉપકરણો અને ઇંધણ જહાજ મારફત ભારતમાં આવે છે. 

Phil
Well, if big companies want to commercialise the sea, let them do it – it’s not my problem. 

Sam
There’s more than that you know…. 

Phil
Really? 

Sam
Well, yes... you’re online a lot… the professor said that most internet traffic goes through undersea cables – so global connectivity depends on the oceans as well.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
‘Connectivity’ નો ગુજરાતીમાં અર્થ એક-બીજા સાથે સંપર્ક બનાવવું. Sounds like the sea is pretty important… 

Phil
Maybe you’ve got a point….  I should mention I quite like eating fish…. 

Sam
…and they are just one kind of marine wildlife…

‘Marine’ એટલે દરિયામાં મળતું અથવા દરિયામાંથી પેદા થતું.  So marine wildlife includes fishes, tortoises and crabs.  

Sam
Yes, fish are just one kind of marine wildlife, there’s a whole ecosystem under the sea which has to be protected to make sure that we can catch fish to eat.

આ સાથે હું તમને આજના પ્રશ્નનો જવાબ જણાવું. પ્રશ્ન હતો કે National Geographic મુજબ દરિયામાં વિશ્વનું કેટલા ટકા પાણી છે?  મિત્રો, જવાબ છે ક) 97%.

Wow, yes 97% of the world’s water, I can see why marine conservation is so important. 

Sam
Yes, the oceans moderate our climate, carry much of our trade, provide food and have internet cables pass through them.

મિત્રો, આજે જે કંઈ પણ શીખ્યા એનું પુનરાવર્તન કરી લઈએ. ‘Moderate’ એટલે સમતોલ કરવું જ્યારે ‘commerce’ ને ગુજરાતીમાં કહીશું વાણિજ્ય. ‘Connectivity’ નો અર્થ થાય છે એક-બીજા સાથે સંપર્ક બનાવવું અને ‘marine’ એટલે દરિયામાં મળતું અથવા દરિયામાંથી પેદા થતું. આવા જ બીજા રસપ્રદ ટૉપિક્ સાથે ફરીથી મળીશું English Together માં. ત્યાં સુધી Bye!
