It looks familiar, but…

Now let's look at some false friends. Fattoria is a word in Italian. But what do you think it means in English? Here's a clue: it means either factory or farm... but which one?

If you said farm, well done! Although fattoria looks like the word factory, it actually means farm. It's a false friend.

Now, to help you start exploring this aspect of language learning, let's do an activity to see if you can spot some other false friends. Read the six example sentences. Some of the words in bold are loanwords which are used correctly, some are false friends which are used incorrectly. Can you spot which are which? Drag the words into the correct columns.
