Introduction
What would you like to make a programme about? Might I suggest dogs and cats? Listen to Neil and Becca talking about ideas for a new programme, while grammar guru Georgie gives you language tips to make your own suggestions.
_____________
Grammar explanation
I was thinking...
We can use past tenses and the continuous to create distance and make suggestions seem more polite
- I was thinking that we could make a programme about dogs and cats.
- I was wondering if you might clean the car this weekend.
- I've been thinking that we could go out to eat this evening.
Have got to
'Have go to' is often used to talk about obligation, but we can also use it to talk about strong suggestions.
- We've got to try that new restuarant.
- You've got to listen to this song.
- You've got to come and visit us soon!
Let's / Let's not
We use let's or let's not to make suggestions. Notice that it is almost always used as a contraction (rather than 'let us')
- Let's go to the beach.
- Let's not buy too much food.
- Let's not do the presentation with no preparation.
Might I suggest...?
We can use the fixed expression 'Might I suggest' or 'Might I suggest that' to make suggestions.
- Might I suggest that you come on time next time?
- Might I suggest that we take a break for now?
- Might I suggest going for a drive?
