Meanings of 'identify'

Let’s learn the verb identify. If you identify something or someone, it means you notice it or them and can say who or what they are.
Examples
I identified the person in the photo as my neighbour.
There was a flavour in the soup that I just couldn’t identify.

If you identify with someone, or a group of people, then you feel that you have something in common with them.
Examples
I identify with teachers. They have a difficult job!

If you identify as something, it means that you would label yourself in that way.
Example
I identify as a hard worker – I’m proud of what I do.

Identify is about recognition. It can be about recognising people and things, you can identify with a situation you recognise, and if you identify as something, it’s how you see yourself.

The verb identify can mean to notice someone or something and be able to say what they or it is.
- I identified the smell as the bread my mum baked when I was a child.
- Can you identify this woman?
If you identify with someone or a group of people, then you feel that you have something in common with them.
- I identify with teenagers. I want to stay up late and sleep until 11 in the morning as well.
If you identify as something, it's how you see yourself.
- I identify as a feminist – I believe in equal rights.
