तुमच्या राहण्याच्या ठिकाणाबद्दल कोणी विचारलं तर उत्तर देताना कुठले शब्द, कसे वाक्प्रचार वापरायचे त्याबद्दल आज शिकणार आहोत. हेलन आणि हॅरीच्या गप्पा ऐकू. ते कुठल्या देशातले, कुठल्या गावातले आहेत काही अंदाज येतोय?

Where do you live?

Harry
I live in a town called Cambridge. It’s in England. How about you?

Helen
I live in Glasgow. It’s a city in the West of Scotland.

काय समजलं यातलं? हॅरी Cambridge, England चा आहे.
I live in a town called Cambridge. It’s in England.

Tejali
हेलन Glasgow, Scotlandची आहे.
I live in Glasgow. It’s a city in the West of Scotland.

OK so let’s take a look at the language used when asking and answering the question ‘Where do you live?’

Tejali
तू कुठे राहतोस हे विचारण्यासाठी ‘where’ म्हणजे कुठे, ‘live’ म्हणजे राहणे, ‘you’ म्हणजे तू हे शब्दं आणि ‘do’ या क्रियापदाची रूपं वापरतात.

Tom
That’s right. When both speakers answer, they begin with ‘I live in…’, then they provide   more detail about the place.

Tejali
बरोबर. एखाद्या जागेचं नाव सांगताना त्याआधी ‘a’ वापरायचं नसतं.  
I live in Glasgow.

Tejali
आपण आपल्या गावाचं वर्णन करण्यासाठी town, village, city हे शब्द तुम्ही वापरू शकता. पण ही सामान्य नामं आहेत, त्यामुळे  त्याआधी ‘a’ वापरायच.
A town, a village, a city.
      
I live in a town.
I live in Glasgow. It’s a city.

आता हे वाक्य ऐका, यात कुठल्या शब्दावर जोर दिलाय त्याकडे लक्ष द्या.       
I live in a town called Cambridge.

Tom
In this sentence, the word ‘town’ and the name of the place, Cambridge, are stressed. Listen again.     
I live in a town called Cambridge

Tom
The first half of the sentence is unstressed and sounds like this. I live in a.
I live in a
Listen again, then repeat.

एखाद्या विशिष्ट ठिकाणाबद्दल सांगताना in theवापरतात.
It’s in the West of Scotland.

Tejali
आता इथे आपण शहराच्या नावासोबत of कसं वापरलं आहे ते लक्षात घ्या.

Tom
Listen again, which words are stressed in the sentence?
It’s in the West of Scotland.

Tom
The stressed words are ‘it’s’, ‘West’ and ‘Scotland’.

Tejali
आता याच्याशी यमक जुळणार वाक्य तयार करू.

Tom
First, ‘of’, becomes ‘of’. Let’s repeat.

of Scotland
West of Scotland.

Next, ‘in the’ becomes ‘in the’. Let’s repeat.
in the West
in the  West of Scotland.

Once again, the whole sentence!
It’s  in the West of Scotland.

अनौपचारीकरीत्या बोलायचं असेल तर शब्दांची छोटी रूपं बरेचदा वापरली जातात.

Tom
It’s in the West.

Tejali
वा! बरीच माहिती देऊन झालीये. आता काय काय केल त्याचा सराव करू. हा प्रश्न ऐका आणि त्यानंतर उत्तर दया.

Tejali 
ब्रिटनमध्ये बाथ नावाचं एक शहर आहे जिथे गरम पाण्याचे झरे आहेत. मी बाथमध्ये राहते असं सांगायचं असेल तर कसं सांगाल?

Tom
I live in a city called Bath.

Tejali
बरोबर आलं का तुमचं उत्तर? आता पुढचं ऐकू.      
Where is that?

Tejali
अरे याला आणखी माहिती हवी आहे. आता तुम्हाला उत्तर द्यायचंय, ते दक्षिण इंग्लंडमध्ये आहे.  

Tom
It’s in the South of England.

Tejali
आता यानंतर समोरच्याला माहिती विचारायाची असेल तर ‘how about you?’ असं विचारतात.
I live in a city in the South of England. It’s called Brighton.

Tejali
Great!बरोबर जमलं तुम्हाला.

Tom
