रस्ता सांगताना किंवा पत्ता सांगताना इंग्रजी शब्द कसे वापरायचे ते आजच्या भागात ऐकणार आहोत. सायमनला बस स्टॅंडवर जायचं आहे. त्याने तीन लोकांना पत्ता विचारला. त्याला कसं उत्तर दिलं लोकांनी? ऐकू या.

Excuse me! Where’s the bus station, please?

 1. Go straight on, take the first road on the left, and it’ll be on your right.

 2. Go straight down here, take the first road on your left, and it’s on the right.

 3. Just go straight, turn left at the supermarket. It’ll be on the right.

लक्षात आलं का? या लोकांनी वेगवेगळे शब्द वापरले पण सगळ्याचा अर्थ एकच होता.

So let’s look at those different phrases they used.

परत ऐकू या... त्यात सुरूवात काय केलीये? काय साम्य आहे त्यात?    

Go straight on…

Go straight down here…

…just go straight…

Tejali
तिघांनीही ‘go straight’ म्हणजे सरळ जा! असं सांगितलं, पण वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारे! एकाने म्हटलं ‘go straight on’ तर दुसरा म्हणाला ‘go straight down here’. त्यांना म्हणायचं काय होतं, कुठेही न वळता सरळ जा.

You can even say ‘go straight up here’! Let’s practise the pronunciation. Repeat after me:

Go straight on.    

Go straight down here.

आता इथे ‘take’ म्हणजे घेणे कसं वापरलंय? आणि क्रियापदानंतर काय आलं ? ऐका परत.

…take the first road on your left…

तर ‘take’ नंतर आलं  ‘the first road’ आणि त्यानंतर ‘on the left’ म्हणजे डावीकडे किंवा ‘on the right’, म्हणजे उजवीकडे.

And here, you can use ‘on the’ or ‘on your’ before ‘right’ and ‘left’. Shall we practise? Repeat after me:

Take the first road on the right.     

Take the second road on your left.

पुढे शब्द आला ‘turn’. तो कसा वापरला आहे? ऐकू या.

…turn left at the supermarket.

Left or right!

Tejali
तुम्ही एखाद्या जागेबद्दल सांगताना ‘at’ वापरा at supermarket. रस्त्याबद्दल सांगत असाल तर ‘on’ वापरा on second road.

Quick practice! Repeat after me:

Turn left at the supermarket.

Turn right on King’s Road.

आणि पत्ता सांगताना सर्वांत शेवटी ते सायमनला काय म्हणाले? ऐकू या.      

…and it’ll be on your right.

…and it’s on the right.

…It’ll be on the right.

They used ‘on the’ or ‘on your’ before ‘right’ and ‘left’ again. And before that?

त्याआधी त्यांनी ‘it’ll be’ – वापरलं. It will be मिळून झालं ‘it’ll be’. ‘It’s’चा अर्थही असात होतो.

Sam
And repeat after me:

It’s on the left.   

It’ll be on the right.

आता सरावाची वेळ झाली. बँकेत कसं जायचं, हे तुम्हाला विचारलं आहे, कसं सांगाल? तुम्हाला सांगायचंय,  “सरळ जात राहा.” आणि नंतर सॅमचं उत्तरही ऐका.

Great! आता सांगा, ‘cinema’ म्हणजे चित्रपटगृहावरून डावीकडे वळा. इथे तुम्हाला cinema च्या आधी at वापरायचं आहे.

Sam
Turn left at the cinema…

Tejali
आता सांगा, ते डावीकडेच आहे, इथे ‘on the’ वापरा.

It’s on the left.

Well done! आता तुम्हाला कोणाला रस्ता सांगायचा असेल तर अगदी नीट सांगता येईल.
