Millom is a small coastal town situated on the fringe of the Lake District National Park, in the southerly part of Copeland District. The BBC Bus team spent a week in the community during December 2006, when Millom residents contributed stories and reports to BBC Radio Cumbria's breakfast show. Mining Days | | Millom's iron miner |
Millom at one time was bustling with the iron industry, and during the late 1800's was one of the busiest mining areas in Europe. The ironworks may longer be there as a central focus, but the people of Millom are fiercely loyal to the small town and maintain very strong community links by pulling together on all sorts of local projects. Millom Folk Museum is running a project to collect memories of the mining days in a quest to keep the memories alive. Norman Nicholson | | Norman Nicholson plaque |
Norman Nicholson, the Cumbrian writer, was born and grew up in Millom at the start of the 20th Century. The inspiration for his writings came from absolutely anything that he set eyes on – from the beautiful scenery to the local ironworks. The CommunityAndrew Bird who lives in Millom created a webpage about himself on the BBC bus visitor website. On his page you find can find about his interests and music tastes, but here’s what he has to say about living in Millom: "I have been living in Millom for as long as I can remember and I hope to move away to Newcastle to find work as I will not find many jobs in Millom. I also hope to ride on the brand new transpennine express 185 when it enters service on the Furness line in December 2006. I go to Millom railway modellers once a week and I sometimes give the trains a run. I prefer the modern trains that run currently and I hope to collect the models of them. | | Andrew Bird |
I like living in Millom because it has plenty of tourist attractions. My favourite is Hodbarrow Nature Reserve because it is never closed and you can go there anytime you choose. (even at Christmas). The thing I don't like about living in Millom is the graffiti because it puts the tourists off coming to Millom, and the amount of litter as there are not enough litter bins".
