Your Community - Millom

During its time, Millom has been transformed from a small farming community to a bustling town after the discovery of iron ore in the mid 1800's , but since the ironworks closure in the 1960's has developed into a peaceful but active tourist town.

Millom is a small coastal town situated on the fringe of the Lake District National Park, in the southerly part of Copeland District.

The BBC Bus team spent a week in the community during December 2006, when Millom residents contributed stories and reports to BBC Radio Cumbria's breakfast show.

Mining Days

Millom's iron miner
Millom's iron miner

Millom at one time was bustling with the iron industry, and during the late 1800's was one of the busiest mining areas in Europe. The ironworks may longer be there as a central focus, but the people of Millom are fiercely loyal to the small town and maintain very strong community links by pulling together on all sorts of local projects.

Norman Nicholson, the Cumbrian writer, was born and grew up in Millom at the start of the 20th Century. The inspiration for his writings came from absolutely anything that he set eyes on – from the beautiful scenery to the local ironworks.

The Community

Andrew Bird who lives in Millom created a webpage about himself on the BBC bus visitor website. On his page you find can find about his interests and music tastes, but here’s what he has to say about living in Millom:

"I have been living in Millom for as long as I can remember and I hope to move away to Newcastle to find work as I will not find many jobs in Millom. I also hope to ride on the brand new transpennine express 185 when it enters service on the Furness line in December 2006. I go to Millom railway modellers once a week and I sometimes give the trains a run. I prefer the modern trains that run currently and I hope to collect the models of them.

I like living in Millom because it has plenty of tourist attractions. My favourite is Hodbarrow Nature Reserve because it is never closed and you can go there anytime you choose. (even at Christmas). The thing I don't like about living in Millom is the graffiti because it puts the tourists off coming to Millom, and the amount of litter as there are not enough litter bins".

Millom Railway and Scale Modellers

The club was formed ten years ago and meets on Tuesday & Thursday evenings, 7pm at St. George’s Hall, Millom. It is open to all with an interest in railway modelling. Female members are welcome and a reduced membership fee is available. Visitors & new members are always welcome, regardless of modelling ability. We can all learn! There is disabled access available (portable ramp).

• Currently have models in N, OO & O Gauge.
• Plans to build a layout in TT (3mm) Gauge.
• Plans to build an outdoor layout in O (7mm) and G Gauges.

They run a bi-annual model railway exhibition in the town - the next exhibition is planned 2008, attracting 300+ visitors to Millom. The club takes part in local tourism initiatives such as the Heritage Week and in recent years have exhibited the Millom layout in the Tourist Information office.
