Will the sun shine for the summer solstice?

Derek Brockway

It felt more like summer again yesterday with most of Wales basking in sunshine. Much of the cloud was across Scotland and northern England (shown in white on the satellite picture below) and it felt fresher than Wednesday with lower humidity.

A few people spotted a ring or halo around the sun yesterday afternoon.

Halos are caused by both refraction, or splitting of light, and also by reflection, or glints of light from ice crystals contained in high cirrus clouds

There’s an old weather saying: ring around the sun or moon means rain or snow soon. There’s truth to this saying, because high cirrus clouds often come before a storm.

There is no sign of a storm on the horizon, but it looks like turning a little more unsettled over the weekend but with some dry weather.

On Friday most places will be dry with the best of the sunshine in the south and southwest. North and mid Wales will be much cloudier with perhaps the odd spot of drizzle, but it should brighten in places with a few breaks in the cloud during the afternoon. Top temperatures will be in the sunnier southeast reaching around 21°C; cooler in the north and west, only 14 or 15°C on the coast with an onshore breeze.

Friday evening will be dry for most but cloud will increase overnight with some showery rain later in the night into Saturday morning.

Saturday will start cloudy with some showery rain crossing the country, heavy in places with low cloud, mist and hill fog. However, during the morning it will dry-up. Most of the country should have a dry afternoon with just the odd shower here and there. And it should brighten-up in places too with some sunshine mainly in the north and east; the southwest will be cloudier with the odd patch of sea mist. It will feel on the muggy side on Saturday with top temperatures between 16 and 21°C, the east and southeast warmest with a light to moderate breeze.

Sunday should be a better day on the whole; there'll be a few scattered showers but some dry weather as well with broken clouds and some sunshine. And it will feel fresher and a little cooler than Saturday; with highs between 14 and 18°C with a moderate to fresh west to south-westerly breeze.

It’s the summer solstice on Sunday, when the sun will be over the Tropic of Cancer, but that doesn’t always mean warmer weather! Next week, some showers or longer spells of rain are expected on Monday. Tuesday should be much drier with some sunshine but then later in the week it may turn windier with low pressure over the Atlantic bringing rain interspersed with brighter weather and showers.
