Van goes South (by Southwest)
Can you guess which Northern Irish act is set to open this year’s SXSW? He may not be an unsigned discovery as such but what better way to begin a celebration of music than with a performance from Mr. Morrison.
And he’s not alone either, joining Van on the journey from Belfast with be soulful singer-songwriter Foy Vance, whose appearance with the Ulster Orchestra is available to watch here.
If that leaves you thirsty for more of the black stuff and general Irishness be sure to catch the NIMIC New Music From Northern Ireland showcase at Latitude 30” on March 14 where Downpatrick rockers The Answer are joined by In Case Of Fire, Driving By Night and electro-pop Ugly Betty favourites Oppenheimer.
Hard working as ever, the Oppenheimer boys and Driving By Night also team up with former Snow Patrol man Iain Archer and a host of their friends from Southern Ireland at the Music from Ireland Brunch at BD Riley’s on March 13.
A stop off here will get you a full Irish breakfast and music from the ever impressive Cathy Davey, Dublin’s Channel One, Delorentos, The Bleedin Bleedins and Distractors as well as shoegazing from Fight Like Apes and some afternoon soul from Laura Izibor.
As ever, BBC Radio 1’s Introducing in Northern Ireland with Rory McConnell show will keep you right on the pulse, while my old friends at Across The Line will also be heading out to keep an eye on the Irish antics.
Electro-pop, all that soul and not a bit of fiddly-dee in sight. Here’s some Oppenheimer:
Track: Breakfast In NYC
Tomorrow: England
