Johnny Thunders - So Alone

Poor old Johnny Thunders. He died in a mess of drugs and errant circumstance in New Orleans, aged 38. Nobody knows what happened exactly, but clothes and personal effects were stolen from room 37 of St Peter's Guest House and the body was discovered in a grotesque state. He doesn't get mentioned so much these days, but Johnny's sprawling guitar style (more loose than Keith Richards, fall-about Check Berry,) was the fundamental element of the Sex Pistols and every punk combo afterwards.

The 'So Alone' album of 1978 followed on from his New York Dolls and

Heartbreakers period and the recording was a deal sharper. Not that

the sessions were abstemious. Many of the guest musicians were heroin

users and Johnny was tremendously pinned at times. But though the

havoc, he managed the epic pathos of 'You Can't Put Your' Arms Around

A Memory' and a fun version of 'Great Big Kiss'. He sings 'Daddy

Rolling Stone' with Phil Lynott and Steve Marriott - a legion of the

doomed, all set to exit the story.
