You sit around getting older

So that was a lovely thing. All dressed up for the Variety Club Hall Of Fame Dinner which saw all of Radio 2 get honoured, I only missed a couple of courses.

There were speeches and songs (Petula Clark, Gary Barlow, Jamie Cullum, James Blunt) but the best bit was the going-on-stage- moment. Presenters tend not to see very much of anyone, other than those who are on before and after you.

So when we all trooped forward, Chris E, Graham N, Jo W, Trevor N, Ken B, Jeremy V etc, it was quite a moment. I was sat next to Jamie Cullum and I can tell you it’s quite busy being Jamie - a steady procession of selfie requests throughout the evening made food and chat quite a challenge.

One other highlight - Jeremy vine tying my bowtie. He saw a man in need and stepped forward. And while it might be true that Fadi the waiter had to re-tie it immediately, the gesture was a good one.

So. I’m off to see Bruce. I shall then recover myself and stride back to work, only smiling occasionally. You’ll hear it all tomorrow!

And some Desert Island Books for you today. This is the second of our 4-parter series and today it’s international bestseller Jilly Cooper. Is the word ‘bonkbuster’ allowed in the blog? Well we’ll find out because she invented them (it seems to me). Mount! Riders! Score! Jump! and so on. So JILLY COOPER oldies and her choice of books after 6.

Now all I need is my best/scruffiest plaid shirt, best/scruffiest jeans and best/scruffiest boots and I’ll be off...
