Prince

It's not often you hear new material from Prince, so when he debuted a brand new song - 'Rock N Roll Love Affair' - on US TV this week it's no wonder it was met with howls of delight online.

The song - performed for chat show host Jimmy Kimmel - also marks the first time that the Purple one has ever allowed a performance to be uploaded to YouTube, a big shift from his previous stance on the subject.

To mark his return, we thought what better idea than to ask you to create the ultimate Prince inspired playlist on BBC 6 Music? It could be:

*His influences, from Sly & The Family Stone to Parliamant via Hendrix, Duke Ellington & Curtis Mayfield.

*Influencees - perhaps Outkast, Lenny Kravitz or Pharrell Williams?

*Collaborators - maybe you'd like to hear the Bangles, Chaka Khan or even Wendy & Lisa?

*Your favourite Prince tracks, rarities and B-sides

It's up to you - to get involved leave your suggestions below, post them on our Facebook page, tweet them to us using #prince6music, email us or add suggestions to our collaborative Spotify playlist. And remenber, if you're a Prince fan we'll be turning 6 Music purple from 1800 GMT on Sunday.

Some B-sides would be good - how about 'How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore', which I think is one of his most overlooked piano ballards? And no-one ever plays 'Rock Hard in a Funky Place' from the Black Album on the radio either, despite it having the best horn-line in the history of funk...

And if you need to go to the loo, how about the 21-minute 12" version of 'America', an amazing song. Wendy Melvoin says in the new Prince biography (by Matt Thorne) that she thinks it's the best song they recorded, "an unstoppable groove", and who are we to argue with her!

How about some reggae from Prince, yes he did Reggae, Blue Light, Poom Poom Poom and Always in My Hair.

So many tracks, you'd need a whole day to cover his music, his influences.

    The guy is a genius.

I added a few tracks to the Spotify list, but I'd be there all day just adding everything if I don't stop now!

A couple of my favourite albums by the most talented man to ever walk this Earth are The Gold Experience and The Rainbow Children. The latter, despite being heavily religious, is just musically magnificent, and well worth snatching a couple of tracks from to show just how diverse his musical range is.

?uestlove is a definite influencee to consider. There's also a cracking blues-style song that Larry Graham/GCS have just released with Prince really, really tearing it up on guitar.

I could go on, and on, and on, and on...............

Some good suggestions so far. I'd add Calhoun Square, Joy in Repetition, Bambi, Love 2 The 9's, and anything from the Black Album (apart from When 2 R In Love). Then maybe D'Angelo's cover of She's Always In My Hair, Jerk Out and 777-9311 by The Time.

    Looking forward to it.

His recent work? Well, if you wanted to be really brave and blow people's minds, I DARE you to play the title track off Prince's 2001 album, The Rainbow Children!

Failing that (and airing on the side of caution), i would highly recommend:

    Don't Play Me

    Colonized Mind

    Somewhere Here On Earth

    Cheers!
