Bloc Party have dominated the online music conversation all this week and there’s no end in sight. It all began with the NME reporting the band were set to hold auditions for a new frontman, fuelling speculation on blogs and Twitter that singer Kele Okereke had quit the group.



Kele responded by rubbishing the claims on his blog, while NME have published their original audio interview with Russell Lissack on Soundcloud. So have they or haven’t they?



It’s all still unclear but tonight Now Playing wants you to help build a Bloc Party inspired playlist celebrating the band past, present and future.

After the announcement, confusion, not-quite-sure-what’s-happening with Bloc Party happening at the moment, Kele has had his say on his blog – and a number of fans have given their opinions on the matter.



The Weeknd has remixed Florence + the Machine’sShake it Out – loads of blogs are loving it, see if you agree by having a listen on YouTube.



Producer Totally Enormours Extinct Dinosaurs and Donae’o have done an interesting switch-a-roo as they’ve both remixed each other. The tracks in question – TEED’s Garden and When Angels Sing from the London rapper. Have a listen on the Mad Decent blog.



Korn have gone and done the astonishing and announced details of a dubstep album! The Path of Totality will be released on December 5 – with lead track Get Up, already released and produced by Skrillex. Full tracklist at NME.



The Dum Dum Girls have unleashed their kaleidoscopic video for Bedroom Eyeson YouTube.

Bloc Party sprung themselves onto the music world without much notice in 2003 after handing 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq a copy of She’s Hearing Voices at a Franz Ferdinand gig – and the rest is history.



Their debut LP, Silent Alarm, was anything but quiet – voted album of the year by the NME in 2005 – and tracks like Banquet and Helicopter winning fans from indie magazines to commercial dance floors.



Two more albums followed – A Weekend in the City and Intimacy – and an ever growing reputation as an exceptionally exciting live act which has seen the band put in special performances on stages from Reading to New Zealand.



The last couple of years have been quiet for Bloc Party, though lead singer Kele Okereke has started an exciting solo career. Moving in a more electronic direction The Boxer was released last year, and the video for new track What Did I Do, featuring Lucy Taylor, has emerged on YouTube over the past seven days.



The future of Bloc Party has been called into question this week, with rehearsals and auditioning for singers going on – but let’s forget that for the time being and celebrate what Kele, Russell, Gordon and Matt have given us.

Bloc Party have confirmed to NME they are auditioning for a new singer, but there is no bad blood between them and Kele Okereke.

The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett has continued to demonstrate his love of thrashing guitars and driving beats by remixing the Foo Fighters’White Limo, after a request from pal Dave Grohl. The result is up on Soundcloud.



And sticking with the Foos, as part of Fallon’s Pink Floyd week, they performedIn the Flesh – alongside Roger Walters.



Nirvana’s legendary gig at the Paramount Theatre 20-years ago is currently streaming on Vevo – but be quick, as they’ll be taking it down later.

Music Ally are reporting an iPhone app from Domino which follows on from their radio station which ran for a week a couple of months ago. It will have weekly changing radio content, tracks from their artists, videos, gig listings and so on.



Holy Ghost! have unveiled the new video for Hold My Breath on Vimeo.



The Cure have announced they will perform their first three albums in full in New York, Los Angeles and London’s Royal Albert Hall. More at Pitchfork.



Rihanna has been causing a bit of a stir in Bangor, Northern Ireland, as the farmer who owns the field where she was shooting a video told her to cover up! The father’s who bought their children down so they could have a look didn’t see the problem. More at Billboard.

On YouTube, is footage of Pink Floyd live from Wembley in November 1974, with the backdrop being the original touring screen films – its called, The Greatest Gig in the Sky, and restarts every hour.

“One of our favorite bands of all time, R.E.M., for some crazy reason have finished, and it's sad. So with the most respect in the world, this is just to show how much they meant to us,” said Chris Martin just before launching into a rendition of Everybody Hurts by the band which is no more.

When Gold Panda releases new music, the internet usually goes crazy. An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds is no exception – have a listen on Soundcloud.



And Yuck have also made a new track available to hear on Soundcloud. Called Sooth Me, it will be part of their deluxe album which is coming out in the US.

‘Battersea Power Station’ is trending on Twitter today, as a helium-filled pig is hovering over the disused plant. The landmark gave the cover for Pink Floyd’s album Animals which is celebrating its 35th Anniversary. The stunt marks the reissuing of the band’s back catalogue.

Tickets for Coldplay’s tour this December sold out online in minutes this morning, despite people complaining about the cost and the two-per customer limit. Read more at NME.



Bjork’s self produced, one-shot video for Moon is up on Vimeo.



The first fruits from the Metallica and Lou Reed collaboration has surfaced on Soundcloud – its called The View.

Kai Fish of the Mystery Jets has released the video for his solo track My Anima to YouTube.

The New York Times are streaming the video for Honey Bunny by Girls – the first track from new album Father, Son and Holy Ghost.



Pitchfork are streaming the reworked version of We Bros by Wu Lyf which is scheduled for a vinyl release in November.



Dutch Uncles have revealed the video for track The Ink, which gives an insight into how the Mancunian band get ready in the morning.

The biggest news online over the past 24-hours has of course been the break up of R.E.M. The seminal US band who paved the way for so many made the announcement on their official website.

Music Ally are reporting Spotify have reached 2million subscribers – meaning an extra 500,000 since their US launch two and a half months ago.



And the trailor for the U2 documentary on Achtung Baby has been released to YouTube. Called From the Sky Down it will be screened on October 9.

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band.



“We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”



So reads the statement just released by R.E.M confirming the band are no more after more than 30-years together.



It’s hard to underestimate the contribution that R.E.M have made to alternative music over the past three decades. Formed by Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry in Athens, Georgia in 1980, their early albums on I.R.S – most notably Life’s Rich Pageant and Document - were crucial in pushing alternative rock into the mainstream.

The band went on release a further 11-albums on Warner Brothers culminating in this year’s Collapse into Now, headlining Glastonbury Festival and becoming one of the world’s biggest stadium rock bands in the process.



In recent years their output may not have matched the critical and commercial peak of 1991’s Out of Time and 1993’s Automatic For The People, and many argue that the band never recovered from Bill Berry’s departure in 1997 after suffering a brain anurysm during the Monster world tour.

However they leave one of the best back catalogues in rock and an enduring legacy in opening the down the doors for alternative music worldwide. Indeed, you can arguably this week’s other major story, 20 years of Nirvana’sNevermind, may not have come about if it wasn’t for Stipe and company.



So on this Friday’s Now playing we want to celebrate R.E.M – their music, their influences, those they influenced and key collaborators

It’s coming up to the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana’s seminal album, Nevermind. Steve Lamacq is doing a special on Friday to mark the occasion – and there's been rather a lot of people discussing the milestone online this week…

NME.com asked a number of bands from Arctic Monkeys to Everything Everything and Suede what their favourite Nirvana track is.



American radio station The End 107.7 have three new and unreleased tracks from the band!



Well, kinda.



They have some of the demos which are coming out on the 20th anniversary deluxe box set, including Smells Like Teen Spirit Live From The Paramount – which strictly speaking are unreleased, but not really new as some blogs are saying.



And from that gig, on the Nirvana Vevo page right now there are some clips.



While a cattle of Seattle artists last night performed the album in full, including bassist Krist Novoselic – its up for the rest of the day to watch again so be quick and click here.

Nirvana aren’t the only band with a 20-year anniversary – Pearl Jam have teamed up with director Cameron Crowe for a celebration of the band’s two decades in music with a documentary and album of 29-rare and unreleased tracks which you can stream at Spinner.

The AV Club have the Dum Dum Girls’ new album Only in Dreams up, which follows on from last year’s debut I Will Be.



The Hunter is the new album from Mastodon and you can listen to it in full, interestingly enough, on YouTube. This kind of forces of you to hear it front to back as its down as one 53-minute track with a pretty cool visualiser running throughout.



Modeselektor’s new album Monkeytown is also streaming as a whole. With appearances from Thom Yorke – Song Operated are one of a number of sites currently hosting it.

The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Jim Reid has unveiled a new track via Soundcloud and the band’s Twitter called Black and Blues.



The video for the Arctic Monkeys’Suck it and See has caused a bit of controversy. With two versions – one clean and one not so clean – here’s a link to the former.



You may remember a couple of weeks ago we had a video game special on Now Playing – well in the same vein the line-up for FIFA 12’s soundtrack has just been announced and includes the likes of The Strokes, Kasabian, CSS, TV on the Radio and more – have a look in full on NME.



Warpaint did a session for Rough Trade and it included this version of Billie Holliday which has found its way to YouTube.

The Manic Street Preachers have the video for the first track off their forthcoming album, National Treasures. It’s a cover of The The’s This is the Day – have a peak on YouTube.



Dance music is still getting to grips with the sad passing of DJ Mehdi, and amongst the hundreds of tributes being posted online is this mix uploaded by Ed Banger by Feadz in his honour.

Pretty Much Amazing have three new tracks from James Blake, who debuted them during his Essential Mix this last weekend.

So after their storming Bestival performance at the weekend, what better band to celebrate on Now Playing than the mighty Cure? We were literally bombarded with suggestions of tracks related to the group and boy, have they made an impact on you over the last three decades. From people who walked down to the aisle to ‘Pictures of You’ to couples who’ve named their daughters Charlotte (Sometimes), Robert Smith and company seemed to have touched the 6 Music audience in a way that few other acts have. It was also lovely to see so many messages from people who had seen the band play in early 1980s and were still there in the audienceon the Isle of Wight last weekend. Dedication indeed.

Also in the show we heard new music picked by CMU and The Blue Walrus, a fantastic cut from the new Kasabian album out next week and a snippet of a new Thom Yorke track called The Twist. Sample lyric? “The Twist/The Twist/The Twist…” oh, you get the idea.

Gravity the Seducer, the new LP from Ladytron, may be out this week - but this doesn't stop them from uploading it to Soundcloud to listen to in full if you can't decide whether to buy it or not. 

The Subways' new album Money and Celebrity has been made available to stream in full on NME.com. It is released next Monday and produced by Blur and The Smiths studio-man Stephen Street.

Primus, the artist behind the South Park theme tune, has his new album streaming on the animated series’ Facebook page – its called Green Naugahyde.



An album of sessions from Miles Davis’ 1967 European tour is forming an album - Live In Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Vol. 1 – which you can listen to on NPR.



Also on NPR this week is Tori Amos’ new album. Called Night of Hunters, it is released on September 19.



Hip-hop collective, Das Racist, have their new album streaming on Spotify.

Coldplay are back with another track from new album Mylo Xyloto on YouTube. Its called Paradise – do you agree with the title?

And the band have also revealed the tracklist of their new album which comes out on October 24.



Pearl Jam have oft covered Neil Young’sRocking in the Free World. Well, on the anniversary of 9/11, Young himself joined the band on stage in Toronto to perform the track – have a look on YouTube.



Drowned in Sound are currently hosting the new five-track EP from Memoryhouse. Along with a track-by-track guide its called The Years and will come out on Sub Pop on September 19.

The Cure played their only European festival date over the weekend at Bestival, and YouTube user topscooter, has a load of songs from their set on his channel.



It could be argued this round-up features the Radiohead boys quite a lot. That would be fair. They do lots of things and normally its quite good.



So today, after leaked versions of Thom Yorke singing (wailing?) on new Modeselektor tracks emerged at the tail end of last week – we now have a stream of the official remix by the German producers of Radiohead’s Good Eveneing Mrs Magpie.



Meanwhile, Jonny Greenwood and Richard D. James of Aphex Twin fame shared a stage with avant-garde composer, Krzysztof Penderecki, in Poland over two nights. Consequence of Sound have some footage.



And the Oxford band have a famous fan – watch this video to see Jim Carrey (yer Pet Detective and The Mask) covering Creep in a New York bar.



Howling Bells' new album is out today and to celebrate – so is the video for track Into the Sky.

Q Magazine are putting together a cover album of U2’sAchtung Baby. The news was broke by Rolling Stone, while the album will see contributions from the likes of Jack White, Patti Smith and Depeche Mode.



The Fall have announced details of a new album and tour dates. Ersatz G.B will be the band’s 29th studio LP – more details at NME.com.



And NME.com also have an exclusive clip from Cameron Crowe’s forthcoming documentary on Pearl Jam, called Pearl Jam Twenty.



A video of Amy Winehouse dueting and discussing her collaboration with Tony Bennett has surfaced on YouTube ahead of the release of Tony Bennett: Duets II on September 20. The video and full version of the two performing Body and Soul will be released on September 14 though – what would have been Winehouse’s 28th birthday.



The Guardian are exclusively streaming Beriut’s new video, Santa Fe - a homage to Zach Condon's hometown.

This week the Mercury Music Prize has dominated the online music world, and in particular, PJ Harvey, who become the first person to pick up a second award with Let England Shake – a decade after her first win with Tales from the City, Tales from the Sea.



There’s been a lot of debate about who should’ve won but it seems Harvey’s victory has been largely well received and as a result, Peej is the basis of this evening’s playlist on Now Playing @6Music.

Everyone thinks they could be a music journalist. They also assume that it’s one long excuse to hang out with their favourite artists and get into gigs for free… which it can be, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Here’s a few home truths about breaking into the business:



1) Anyone who likes music can be a music journalist, right?

Wrong. School and Uni teach you to write academically, but they don’t teach you to write in an entertaining way. Most people can write, but few can write well. This is where your own reading comes in – if you’re not a voracious reader, give up now. You learn by reading, as this allows you to develop (NOT steal) your own style. And as far as music goes, you’ll not go far without reading about the kind of music you want to write about…



2) Involve yourself in the discourse

Music doesn’t stand still, especially in the digital age where anyone can make music in their bedroom. Because of this, the traditional media that was once so powerful (never talk to music fans over 35 about the NME unless you have hours to spare) now shares its influence with blogs, web-zines, U-streams, messageboards and Facebook & Twitter too.

Somebody, somewhere, is writing about the music you love – so read it, follow it, Tweet about it, get on the forums and generally get involved in your scene. Also make sure you go to clubs and gigs regularly - which should go without saying.



You have to write from a position of knowledge, otherwise why would anyone listen to you?



3) Get loads of work experience

This is one of the dirty little secrets of all journalism – it’s a very middle-class business, for the most part because it runs on ‘internships’, i.e. free (or cheap) labour. A friend of a friend is now a heavy hitter on a national paper but he started out at the nationals by working for another, without pay. That’s an extreme example, but he is extremely successful.



Alexi Duggins has his own TV column in Time Out and more recently became their go-to guy for grime. But before that he was an intern at the Itchy City guides, eventually rising to the post of Features Editor in a young company that put a premium on talent over experience. However he had also been Editor of the London Student in 2004-5. So basically, writing a few articles in your student rag isn’t going to cut it (and neither is just having a degree or even the increasingly common journalism postgrads). Learn by doing, for anyone who will let you – try websites / magazines / blogs… which brings us on to…



4) Getting some clippings together

To get some work experience (and later to get jobs) you will need to have some ‘clippings’ to show people. That means links / print outs / screen captures or even photocopies of your work.



When I started out writing as an amateur the best part of 10 years ago, you sent something to one of the music mags and got some response if you were lucky. However now there’s umpteen websites that won’t offer to pay you (because they can’t afford to) but will publish your work. I even write for one, so if anyone wants to do club reviews in exchange for a couple of guestlists, e-mail me and we’ll chat. But before you write for others, you should:



5) Write for yourself (aka blog)

Literally everyone does it now. I briefly wrote for iDJ magazine, which recently went bust. So now Alex Gwilliam, former Assistant Editor of iDJ, has set up his own blog. Kate Hutchinson, the Clubbing Editor of the wonderful Time Out, also has one.



Why do they bother?



Well, because blogs allow them to publish full versions of interviews – people say a lot more than 1000 words in interviews, trust me – but also so they can talk about other things that they like, as well as their publication’s usual subject. And that can show a bit of breadth to prospective employers – e.g. you can show a film review you’ve done on your own blog when pitching a film article. But as a rookie, you need somewhere you can publish your stuff, to be able to bargain with Music PRs. These guys will send you stories, so you need their goodwill.



6) Don’t give up the day job

Most people in music journalism have a day job – often in music PR, but many just have a straight office gig (I’ve certainly done my time here). Staff jobs are increasingly hard to come by and freelancing for a living can be brutal – chasing money is not fun and doesn’t always lead to success, plus getting paid when so many people write for free is getting ever more difficult.

I’ve recently done bits of PR work and even branched out into doing some technology articles - so cultivate a list of interests, because the more things you can write about, the more employable you are. But for someone starting out, be prepared to write in your leisure time – if you love it enough, you’ll make the sacrifice.

Laura Marling’s new album A Creature I Don’t Know is streaming via the Guardian’s music pages. After the success of Sophia across both 6 Music and the blogs – the album looks set to only continue the growth of Marling’s reputation. 

Mexican born producer, Neon Indian, has his new album streaming on NPR. Now residing in Texas Era Extraña, click if you like Washed Out, Toro y Moi or Chad Valley.



Annie Clark, or St Vincent as you may know her by, has her album Strange Mercy also streaming on NPR ahead of its release on September 13. She has been a costumed member of the Polyphonic Spree as well as being part of Sufjan Stevens’ band in the past – and is well worth checking out.



Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have their new album, Hysterical, streaming on 3Voor12 – which is their first studio LP since 2007’s Some Loud Thunder.

Hypem are honouring the Father, Son and Holy Ghost by Girls at the moment ahead of next week's release.



And the soundtrack for American TV show True Blood is up at Entertainment Weekly featuring tracks from Gil Scott-Heron, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club amongst others.

The birthday wishes for Freddie Mercury, who would have just turned 65, have been pilling up over the past 24-hours. My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way said, “Freddie Mercury, to me was probably the most important frontman to me growing up.” Other messages come from musicians as wide and varied as Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters to Miss Piggy – all of which can be found on Queen’s Official YouTube channel.

As well as this, the band are streaming their entire 1986 concert from Wembley, also on YouTube.



New Order are set to play two gigs in Paris and Brussels next month in aid of their friend Michael Shamberg who produced a number of their videos. More information at Gigwise.



Bon Iver have popped by NPR’s World Café and performed an acoustic version of Beth/Rest – its up on Soundcloud.

Fact Magazine have unveiled their latest episode of their mix series – this time from Swedish duo Air France.

Shaun Keaveny and 6 Music have been honouring what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 65th Birthday with the Grow a Tash for Freddie campaign – and Google have also marked the occasion with this Doodle.

A lot of people have been talking about how Mercury nominee Adele’s been dropping hints about singing the next James Bond theme tune, including Fake DIY.

And so as the summer and festival season comes to an end, it’s hard to believe there are now just 113-shopping days left before it’s Christmas once more! Maybe it’s not quite time to start compiling your albums of the year list just yet, for September normally heralds the start of some frenzied activity on the album release front after the familiar slowdown during the summer months.



One of the perks of blogging is that you often receive promo copies of albums months in advance of their official release. So I can state, with some degree of confidence that there should be something for everybody to look forward to in the coming months.



Ladytron return with their fifth studio album, Gravity The Seducer (12th September) which finds them at their imperious best and features a mesmerising mix of glacial choral vocals, sinister, symphonic synths and relentless driving beats.



Manchester electro-indie trio The Whip’s much anticipated sophomore album Wired Together (19th September) sees the band embrace a more upbeat sound which may even have even induced Sir Douglas Bader to shake a leg on the dancefloor.



Dum Dum Girls return with their second album Only In Dreams (September 27th) and prove that head honcho Dee-Dee is a songwriter of real depth and talent. This time around the band get the full studio treatement courtesy of legendary producer Richard Gotterer and The Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner. At the risk of being accused of indulging in hyperbole it’s my opinion that in any right thinking society this album will be one day viewed as a classic.



It’s quite simply a stunning collection of songs, fusing the girl group sound of yore with a modern twist whilst expanding the template set down on their lo-fi debut I Will Be to produce a mature, sophisticated and on occasion epic sound. It will be there or there about in the album of the year stakes without a doubt.



There’s also the gritty, romantic realism of Prince Edward Island who’s debut album has just been released. This Day Is A Good Enough Day is a real gem, full of twisted wit, wisdom, and sardonic observation which engages the listener from start to finish.



Keith Top Of The Pops & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band have also released their ‘accidental debut ‘ album – the somewhat belligerently titled F*** You I’m Keith Top Of The Pops and features the likes of Art Brut’s Eddie Argos, Chris Cain from We Are Scientists and Jim Bob from Carter USM. It also includes the factually correct tour de- force that is Two Of The Beatles Are Dead and contains the immortal line ‘If you don’t count Stuart Sutcliffe or the original Paul, then two of the Beatles are dead'.



However the icing on my pre Christmas cake isn’t from some fresh faced whipper snappers, but instead from a band I have loved admired and revered since I was a first became interested in music. It comes in the leather clad shape of The Jesus And Mary Chain whose six studio albums are being reissued as rather wonderful deluxe double albums, each one contains a glossy multi-page booklet with new interviews and photos two CDs and a DVD.



So much better than an admittedly convenient, yet ultimately rather faceless, soulless mp3 download don’t you think?



Oh and I almost forgot, national treasure and jazz hands aficionado John Barrowman makes his bid for the Guinness Book Of Records , as he releases one can safely assume from the title, will be the world’s shortest album Tonight's The Night - The Very Best Of John Barrowman – You have been warned ;)



And there you have it, another summer is almost at an end but I hope you agree there is much to look forward to in the coming months to warm the cockles of your heart and provide musical sustenance as autumn and winter advance.

Big Deal are exclusively streaming their debut album, Lights Out, on NME.com. The album which has been co-produced by Underworld and Dean Reid will be released on September 5 on Mute.



Wild Flag’s self-titled debut LP is NPR’s streaming album this week, which is released on on Merge on September 13.



It isn’t often whole albums are made available to download – but The Dream has done just that. With delays to his forthcoming release, The Love, IV (Diary of a Mad Man), he’s made another new LP 1977 available as a free download via his website under his real name Terius Nash. (There is some very strong language)



He also Tweeted: "chances 'DefJam' puts a Cease and Desist on 1977 unfortunately Very High. but i think yall will have it before lawyers make me take it down."

Some of the tracks from the DRC Music collaboration, which includes Damon Albarn, Dan the Automator and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs have been made available on Soundcloud. Warp will issue the album in October with all proceeds going to Oxfam to assist with aid in the Democratic Republic of Congo.



They’ve also released a trailer on YouTube.



At MTV’s VMAs Beyonce announced she was pregnant and this has broken Twitter records as the most talked about event on the social networking site. There were 8,868 Tweets per second when the news broke, pushed Japan’s victory in the Women’s World Cup into second place.



Sinead O’Conner has taken to writing intriguing blog posts on her website of late. Not only has she begun appealing for “a very sweet sex-starved man,” but she has written an open letter to Bob Dylan asking to collaborate with him and be his harmonica!?!
