It's Tuesday, which means our very own app expert Stuart Dredge was in the studio talking about, yes, apps. Here is what he said, but written down..

NEWS

BBM Music

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) was recently in the news when it was accused of being used to start the UK riots. Now BlackBerry's messaging app is being used for something more legal: music. A new service called BBM Music is coming, which will cost $4.99 a month (UK pricing tba) and lets you stream 50 songs. Which sounds rubbish, but whenever a friend signs up, you get to listen to *their* 50 songs too - your available collection expands by 50 songs whenever someone else you know joins. So it's music sharing but entirely legit.

Booktrack - soundtracks for book-apps

A new startup called Booktrack is touting a new form of e-book: app versions with soundtracks. So it has a Sherlock Holmes story with 'authentic' London noises (hooves, crackling fires etc), and it has versions on the way for The Three Musketeers, Jane Eyre and Romeo and Juliet).

Boyz II Men say it's an 'app-driven world'

Boyz II Men haven't come to the end of the road after all! They're back, and they're very keen on apps. Band member Nathan Morris has given an interview saying he thinks all music will be free in a couple of years, as pure promotion for stuff that people will pay for: live gigs and sponsorship deals. But he also thinks apps are important, to the point of actually designing the band's new app himself. "I think we’re moving into an app-driven world. Five days a week most people aren’t able to get on their computer…"

REVIEWS

Bestival 2011

The app for the Bestival festival is out on iPhone and Android, and it does a lot of what other festival apps have done this summer - lineups, maps, info etc. However, the unique feature here is vouchers to get you cheap stuff at stalls and outlets around the festival site. So they're charging you for the app, but (I hope) you get cheap festival noodles…

Here is the link to the Android version of the app.

Forkly

This is an iPhone app which gets people to take photos of their food with their cameraphone when eating out, and upload their rating of the restaurant for other people to see. And it's actually part of a trend - an app called Foodspotting has been downloaded one million times, while another one called Nosh recently came out to approving headlines. The trend: everyone's a reviewer now: you can't enjoy your grub until you've marked it out of 10 for the wider world…

REM

Taking note of Boyz II Men's advice, REM have launched an official app this weekend. It lets fans stream samples from their back catalogue, watch music videos, upload photos taken at gigs, and choose any gig from their 2008 tour and watch fan YouTube videos - an interesting feature, since they're embracing the idea of fans shooting videos, versus, say, Prince who hates it. And there are other photo features designed to help you share moments when you're listening to a specific song.

It's a Friday, so once again let's celebrate with five of the week's best free downloads, lovingly plonked together on a page with some artwork slapped on it. Massive.

Your final MPFree comes from Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox. His side/solo project is Atlas Sound and this track Terra Incognita will feature on the album Parallax which is out in November on 4AD.

The artwork this week was on the theme of summer, or rather a pic that summed up your summer. We opted for this beauty from Caroline Hancox which is, as you can tell from the mud, a shot from Glastonbury.

Your tracks this week are:

Trwbador - The Sun In Winter

Mariachi El Bronx - 48 Roses

Toro Y Moi - New Beat (Star Slinger Dancehall Mix)

Georgia Ruth Williams - Old Blue

Atlas Sound - Terra Incognita

Some tracks may no longer be available for download.

We're back to tales of love with Memory Tapes this week. Katie Herring send us a mix this week, and she writes...

"I had a couple reason for making the tape. I needed an Easter present for my boyfriend and also he'd just got his first car which only had a tape player so thought it was my chance to kill two birds with one stone. I rummaged around in our loft and found an old tape recorder which looked like it still worked and plugged it into my laptop to record the tracks from Spotify. The end sound quality is questionable but I like to think of it as having an authentic vintage feel!

"Mostly these are bands that have kind of been the soundtrack to our relationship so far with a few others thrown in so I don't look like too much of a girl. Pete and I have known each other for ten years and used to have the same music class together, but have only just recently got together as an 'official' couple. Pete is a bit more hot on the music scene than I am and he introduced me to lots of the bands on the tape.

"I guess you could Say the Feeling is our guilty pleasure and I think I actually played them to him first while we still in the Unofficial stage. He'd come from Exeter to see me at uni on Valentines Day and I think I played the tracks in the car to pick him up from the station. He'll probably say otherwise but that's my memory of it anyway.

"Basically the whole tape was an excuse for me to channel my inner teenage girl! I even made a cover for it!" She did, look, here it is:

And the tracklisting is:

Ben Folds - You Don't Know Me (featuring Regina Spektor)

Bombay Bicycle Club - The Giantess

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

KTB - I Like You Like Me

Maps & Atlases - Pigeon

Plastiscines - Zazie Fait De La Bicyclette

Dog Is Dead - Young

Mumford & Sons - Hold On To What You Believe

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

Beirut - Nantes

OK Go - Here It Goes Again

Hot Club De Paris - The Dice Wasn't Loaded From The Start

Katzenjammer - Wading In Deeper

Iron And Wine - Naked As We Came

The Feeling - We Can Dance

The Whitest Boy Alive - Burning

Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like This

Hot Club De Paris - Clockwork

65daysofstatic - Radio Protector

Chairlift - Bruises

The Besties - Pirate Song

The Middle East - Blood

Marina And The Diamonds - Obsessions

Regina Spektor - Us

This is the album opener, and picks up where the previous album left off.

It's a Tuesday, so if you couldn't quite catch all of techie Guru Stuart Dredge's app news and reviews, here they all are again but written down...

NEWS

Reading and Leeds festival apps (iPhone / Android)

As you'd expect, these app come with all the lineups and location info you'd expect from a festival app.

A Genuine Freakshow

This is a mobile web app from a British band who are playing Reading/Leeds this weekend - basically they'll chuck flyers into the audience with a QR code for their new app, which people can scan there and then to listen to songs etc.

David Baldacci (iPhone)

Author David Baldacci has sold 110 million books, and now he's got an app. It has previews from every novel, but more interestingly, it gives more information on the locations in the book, and has photos and videos from David to keep fans in touch with what he's up to.

REVIEWS

RecyclePix (iPhone / Android / iPad)

This follows on from an app we talked about a few weeks ago where you can photograph graffiti and mess so it can be cleared up. RecyclePix goes a bit further; you can take photos of yourself recycling to earn discounts and coupons on buying stuff. So co-opting this 'share my photos' thing for eco good.

DK The Human Body and DK Quick Cook (both iPad)

Book publisher Dorling Kindersley is getting big into the iPad with two new apps. The Human Body is a full guide to everything skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, skin, hair & nails, lymphatic & immune, digestive, urinary and reproductive. Lots of whizzy hi-res images, zoomable photos and medical details. Meanwhile, DK Quick Cook won't put you off your dinner: it'll tell you how to cook it in 45 minutes.

Peter Dickson's Pocket Announcer (iPhone / Android)

Who? Him who does the voiceover for the X Factor, that's who. He has an app that lets you make him shout whatever sentence you want (albeit choosing from specific words so you can't be rude).

As for the art work this week, we asked for your photos the awesome old people you have in your life which follows on from yesterday's O.A.People's Playlist. We went with this photo from Yana with her Rock Baba (which translates as Rock Grandma).

This week's tracks are:

Ah man, the story behind this week's Memory Tapes is an emotional one. Prepare yourself, and read on through this email from Nikki Crichton...

"The attached CDs were created by a dear friend of mine Will, in 2004. I'd recently finished with Will who, needed to tell me how he felt about me, by way of music. So, he brought a new CD to the bar where I was working, over three days. He didn't include a tracklist as he wanted me to find out what was what myself. These are a mix of tracks we had enjoyed together, tracks that he thought I'd like, or tracks with titles that would give me clues. It didnt win me over but I was mightily moved. We remained good buddies and to this day, many of the songs are favourites and make me think of Will.

"Unfortunately, three months after recieving them, he tragically died.

"An amazing friend Simon, who had never met Will but knew how much the CDs meant to me managed sneak away the original unlabelled discs. Simon has and still does, spend time compilating my taste. He secretly, digitalized them, named the tracks, designed the covers and made my birthday that year a particularly teary one."

Pretty amazing, right? Right. Here's the tracks, and look, one of them still remains unidentified! Anyone else busting to hear that track?

So that's the tracks, and here's the artwork created by Simon:

Come on, you know you wanna, email Lauren your Memory Tape.

NEWS:

Angry Birds goes merchandise mad

There's now an Angry Birds cookbook available to pre-order called Bad Piggies' Egg Recipes. It went on sale last week, alongside a new range of Angry Birds baby items - swaddling blankets, baby burpies and sleeping sacks. The official site also has flip-flops, school satchels, with ties and socks to come.

Facebook is doing a messaging app

It's not in the UK yet, but last week Facebook launched its new big thing on mobile: Facebook Messaging. Using the App, you can 'ping' friends directly and see their reply on-screen - with group messaging too. It's competing against BBM on BlackBerry and Apple's soon-to-launch iMessage.

The X Factor app aims to get people virtually clapping

This year's X Factor is going to have its own iPhone app with a 'Tap to Clap' feature - you tap the screen to signify your appreciation of a performance, a judge's comment or a result, and then that gets put on Twitter and Facebook.

V Festival 2011

It's coming up this weekend, and the V Festival has its own app for iPhone, Android, Nokia and BlackBerry. It's standard stuff - news, stage times, site map. But there's also a feature to find your Facebook friends on-site - sign in to Facebook and it lets you know where they are.

Chill

This is a Facebook app rather than a mobile app, but it's very cool indeed. It's all about social VJing - you have your own virtual room that you invite friends to, and then you basically play YouTube videos to one another. It follows on from the success of Turntable.fm, which did the same thing just for music.

Say What?!

This iPhone music game focuses as much on the lyrics as the music. It's a Generation Game-style scrolling treadmill with little pictures that correspond to words in the song - you tap them in time. Kasabian, Calvin Harris are all in it.

Normally Memory Tapes is about boys and girls getting together. This week, it's about exes. Sorcha O'Higgins writes...

"My ex-boyfriend and I stayed pretty good friends when we broke up a few years ago and made each other mixtapes for each other's birthdays afterwards.

"This one is pretty funny though, because I made him one for his birthday and when he gave me one for mine, it had loads of the same songs on it! Cheating...? I think so..."

Sorcha couldn't lay her hands on the tape, so no artwork this week, but she did provide us with a list of the songs which featured on both tapes, and there's quite a few:

Archie Bronson Outfit - Dart for my Sweetheart

Belle and Sebastian - Seeing Other People

Nina Simone - Baltimore

The White Stripes - Icky Thump

The Beatles - I'm only Sleeping

Aphex Twin - Alberto Balsam

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth

Your final track comes from Foster The People, or rather Grouplove's take on it. The two L.A bands of the moment have got together and scratched each others backs in a remix sense. You'll find the link below with the other offerings from this week.

As for the artwork, well, we've got a beaut! In celebration of Thursday's 'Reach For The Lazers Part 2' rave playlist, we asked for your photos from your rave days.

This week's Memory Tapes comes from Claire Dyer and is a mix made for parents; something we don't get much of on the feature.

Claire writes...

"I've been making mix tapes since I was a kid, my latest is this one I made for my mom as a memento of her and my dad's 40th wedding anniversary.

"We had a big party and together we pulled out all our old records, tapes, CDs and mp3s and made a wicked playlist of all the songs that meant something to them over the years - songs that reminded them of each other, me and my brother, and other family members and friends (and including a sneaky song I wrote).

"I stuck them all on my dad's ipod and that was our playlist for the night. Whereas my dad can listen to that anytime, my mom's only got a built-in cassette player in her car so I made her a tape as a memory of an amazing night and life together."

Rather lovely! And here's the tracks...

The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody (first dance)

The Doors - Beak on Through (To the Other Side)

Joan Jett - I Love Rock n Roll

Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar

Here's another one then; a download, for you, which is absolutely free. You're welcome...

Today's offering comes from Mates of State; husband and wife duo Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel who've been making beautiful music together since 1997 and in that time have produced 6 albums.

This track comes from their forthcoming seventh album, Mountaintops which is due for release in September.

Today's MPFree is a corker! Aren't they all? Yes of course, but this is a great song which now has added RZA.

Tuesday's offering is 'Truth' by Alex Ebert (of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes) - the orginal version appears on his debut solo album Alexander, but this version features a turn by Wu Tang's RZA. It's epic.

Tech-dude Stuart Dredge fills you in on the latest app news and reviews.

NEWS

RCRD LBL

Influential US blog now has an app (available in the UK too) which lets you play and download free songs from all manner of hipster artists, while also creating your own playlists and listening to mixes provided by artists and celebrities.

The Death App

This is pretty spooky but very clever at the same time. The Death App plots all recent car accidents and murders near your current location, so you can see what a dangerous place you live in (or not). The idea is to help house hunters scope out new towns, and also to warn drivers about accident blackspots. Really, though, it's just for death-obsessed paranoiacs who see murderers lurking round every corner.

Streetmuseum Londinium / Buildings

Streetmuseum Londinium is an augmented reality app about Roman London, where you wander around the map looking at artefacts, and watching videos overlaid on the real world of gladiators etc.

Meanwhile, Buildings is an iPhone and Android app about architecture - it has details of 40,000 buildings around the world, and serves up text, images and videos about them. So two apps that get you out and about looking at the real world.

REVIEWS

UberMusic / Panamp

UberMusic is for Android and Panamp is for iPhone, and both do the same thing - replace the music player app that comes with your phone with something 'whizzier'. UberMusic does it with customisable 'skins' (so you can change the look of the player to whatever you want), while Panamp does it with easier playlists and browsing your collection.

AtariTinyRiot

Tiny Riot is an app for letting off steam - you shake your phone and grimace while it makes a big noise. Now it's got an Atari Teenage Riot version, just to make it more noisy. And the camera records your shaking so you can upload your 'tiny riot' to twitter or Facebook. So there's a music angle, but also an interesting story behind it - it was made by Japanese developers who said they wanted to 'release our frustration with the uncertainty of post 3.11 Japan'.

CFG: Cosmo For Guys

Yes, Cosmopolitan has a new iPad app. For men. The idea being it serves up all the bits from Cosmo that they'd otherwise have to sneak a look at a female friend's copy to read. Promises 'eye-popping 3-D sex positions'.

It's part one of five in this weeks MPFREE's, and today it is the latest from the San Diego duo TV Girl with a track called Baby You Were There.

The track is from their new Benny And The Jets EP, of which all tracks have been made available to download for free from the Stereogum website.

In a similar style to their previous self titled EP, the sound is sun dappled indie pop but this time but with a heavier bass backdrop, see what you think below!
