I feel compelled to write to you to offer my humble and heart felt apologies for the events of last Wednesday evening. I was the gentleman your security fellows chased from the back stage area of your circus after the six p.m. performance . I am also regrettably responsible for the deaths of the yellow and blue budgerigars that were perched upon a stand in that area.



I am sure that their deaths must have been a terrible blow to all concerned, especially considering the violence of their demise. I can assure you that malice was the furthest thing from my mind when I entered that area and their deaths were entirely incidental. I initially thought that I had merely killed some pets of the staff, but upon further perusal of the playbill I now realise that I have robbed your circus of one of it's star attractions, namely Coco and Cheep Cheep, the quaintly named 'Flying Lovebirds'.



If I might be allowed to part way explain my actions. I had been forced into attending one of your performances by some very close friends of mine. I had not left my house in quite some time and it was through that the routine and ridged nature of the

in 1918, no allies were in Berlin and if Germany had lost the war, the symbols of the Prussian Empire might be dislike but they were not causing pause... unlike a well known Swastika

oh how i wish that this was actually filmed!!!!! also just about crying with laughter at the absurdity of it all but also believing it at the same time. Hal's voice just leeches through each word. I can picture all of this with alarming clarity inside my head. Poor Hal. My son gets similarily twitchy so i can sympathise #grin but very funny all the same!

Oh Lordy but how good is that? Like others have said, I can hear Hal say every word - just like last night's comment to Annie 'Are you somehow drunk?'

Laugh? I nearly choked!

Unfortunately, the members of my party over looked the implications of the 'miniature' aspects of the proceedings, namely a great number of small living things, a category of nature I am not, to put it mildly, at all fond of. This unforeseen shrinking of scale also necessitated a similar reduction in the size of the circus ring to afford the audience a clear view of all that proceeded.



So it was that I found myself, without warning or chance to mentally prepare, uncomfortably close to a variety of small animals and insects, of time dressed as macabre travesties of humanity; top hatted cockroaches pulling tiny hansom cabs, bowler hatted terriers and poodles taking tea in a bizarre facsimile of a suburban home. I began to feel faint and feverish, and for a while entertained the fancy that I was a trespasser in some animalistic Lilliput.



By the time we reached the horrifying spectacle of the goat being ridden by a monkey sporting Stetson and six guns I feared I would lose all reason.



Barely lucid, I stumbled for what I hoped was the exit, but instead found myself in a canvas walled maze that eventually lead me to a brightly lit room. Scarcely had I a chance to get my bearings than I was swooped upon by a yellow blur that later turned

out to be Coco. He may well have been rehearsing his star turn, but to my addled brain it felt like an attack. I allowed instinct to take over and unfortunately ripped the poor bird to pieces. And, I am afraid to say, ate part of his head. His mate attempted to intervene and soon met the same fate.

"unforeseen shrinking of scale" - had me in stitches :)

OK, before i read this i've had a brainwave. Probably totally wrong so here goes: Future girl wanted Hal to kill the baby because Tom would kill him. Hal definately has a bearing on the war in 2037. As I say, the phrophesy is wrong. Eve doesn't kill the vampires, just causes the war that the vampires win.



Just a thought

I understand there is no way my apologies, sincere though they are, can make up for the loss of these no doubt loved and valued birds. However there is an area in which I can at least attempt to make recompense, that is the potential loss of revenue caused by their demise. Attached to this letter is a package containing an item liberated from Berlin at the end of the war. The symbol stamped on it may give you pause, but I am sure that once melted down it will more than make up for any lost ticket sales.



For legal reasons I will avoid signing my full name, but hope you can accept my humble apologies for my momentary lapse in control and the attached item in good faith.

21- I think Hal is an enemy within. Depending on what course he chooses to take of course.



But it's the mark of the character that I read this in his voice after such small amount of screen time.

21 - Hiya Saint. Had a look at that earlier, specifically because I thought the sign bottom left on yesterday's scroll was the same as one that had 'come with Eve' and I knew Hal had given what it mean. Anyway, wittering on now. I don't think they are the same - the one that Hal points to and says something like 'it may not happen any time soon but it will happen' looks like a figure 8 to me.

It's like George's letter to Eve, in which he fails to correctly use the present perfect tense: unthinkable for a language freak like George.

One question I haven't seen being asked ( or I missed it) is how does Hal know what all the symbols on scroll mean? Griffin had to ask Regus to decipher it.

This was wonderful - loved it!

To pick up some of the points on the other blogs and to add my thoughts on episode 2:



Concerning Annie's grief, especially the thought that she is denying her grief: it's not clear who she is grieving for. There was but one mention in this episode of George and Nina (Tom's "it's George and Nina's baby"); no mention of Mitchell apart from 'a vampire lived here'. Why does it seem to me that these characters cannot be named and their deaths dealt with? Series 4 is not the story of George, Nina and Mitchell, but it is the story of Annie and Eve and their lives have been shaped by those who have died.



I don't see anything that suggests that Annie is denying her grief: she is not being given an opportunity to show this. When Tom moves into Mitchell's room (the room where Annie lay with him, Annie does not say: "Oh, you've moved into this room" or "No, Tom. Not this room"; nor does she say "You can stay in this room" which could show that the deaths have not yet hit home. She says nothing.



Last week, George, her friend, and whose baby she is now caring for, died in her arms. Couldn't Tom have brought up the subject: "Look, Annie, about...." only for Annie to interrupt "Not now, Tom" or rentaghost away? When Tom mentioned George and Nina, couldn't Leo have asked, "Who's George and Nina? Are they here?" (they are, after all, the parents of his Saviour). When Annie mentions a vampire, couldn't Hal have asked for more information? When Hal explained how he controlled his blood hunger, couldn't Annie have shown some recognition of his struggle, or realised that there could have been a way to save Mitchell all along? But they say nothing.



I'm not asking for wailing or buckets of grief, but an acknowledgement in the script that these characters actually existed. And that Tom, Hal, Leo or Pearl may want to talk about them, even if Annie doesn't.



Perhaps the final speech in the pawn shop was meant to address this. But during this speech, the camera repeatedly cuts away to Tom and Hal, and shots of Annie are distracted by her bouncing Eve. We could have had a close up of Annie, the camera getting closer as her words became more personal and difficult, allowing us to get closer into her thoughts and feelings: then the camera cuts and we see the effect her words have had on Tom and Hal, who have now stood down from their fight. But that didn't happen.



This was the episode in which LT said Lenora gives a jaw-dropping performance. This is the episode, I thought, where faith would be restored. Yet this was an episode where we had a repeat of last week's mock Latin ceremony joke, which seemed ridiculous to me again. Yes, Annie has a history of this, but at least the others could see that she was making up the Cheryl Cole and getting it wrong. But to think that old vampires would not know their Shakespeare and Caesar? Even Cutler knows his German composers. To me, this stretches credibility and just looks silly. I didn't amuse me the first time, and irritated me even more the second.



Annie doesn't know that Fergus is a vampire as she is surprised he can see her. Therefore, she can't know that Hal is also a vampire. But when Tom threatens him with the stake, Annie doesn't shout "What are you doing?" nor "What will the neighbours think?" to try and stop him murdering a seemingly innocent man. She's too busy being distracted by Tom shoving his stake in her shrubbery and coming out with jokes that, to me, are at the expense of her character and integrity.



There was a theory that the opening episode had to deal with so much in such a short space of time because all that information was vital to setting up the series. I would still have preferred to spend longer with the characters in episode 1 and give more time to George and his death. But, I accepted that such exposition might be necessary. Then, watching episode 2, I found myself thinking: did we really need to spend so much time in 2037? So much time on the scrolls? What vital significance did they have on episode 2 that they couldn't have waited, so more time could be spent on dealing with George, his loss of Nina, the loss of Mitchell, establishing further Hal, Tom, Leo and Pearl? All that seemed significant this week was the presence of a scroll: the girl on the TV could still have appeared, her precise identity being a mystery (as it is now anyway).



I liked Hal for his calm authority and confidence. I enjoyed the scenes with Leo and Pearl. I hope there's more to Tom than a series of comedy lines but enjoyed the flirtation between Tom and Hal. On the whole, I thought it improved on episode 1, although it still isn't Must See TV for me, and time is running out.

26-Ed i agree with you regarding both Hal and George's letters. I don't know Hal that well but he seems well educated.



31-I told you Mitchell is like Voldermort. Maybe George is the Candyman and Nina is Beetlejuice? I mourn my Annie though.

32. So that's what Hal has been doing in those 55 years, hidden away in the barber shop ( cos that's how long it would take read all the blogs!)

drunkkath 29 Hal knows what the symbols mean because he is an OO. I am sure there is reference somewhere to him being extremely old. The other more modern vamps would be ignorant compared to the knowledge he has accrued.



Loving this letter. I heard Hals voice reading this too.



I am enjoying this new series too. However that bit with Annie doing a ceremony was not my cup of tea. Maybe she was feeling threatened by Pearl so did something silly. Just my personal opinion.

34-It will also require a great deal of focus. Maybe Annie will let him play Angry Birds on her new lappy top. That's not very relaxing though.

Everything Sykes taught Annie seems to have been forgotten.

Ok, rewatched episode 2 on BBC3 last night and have to say it faired a lot better this time around. There's still about 15 minutes overall that are clunky and pointless. Annie's ceremony, Pearl being not very likeable all episode (why should I care that she passed away when she was horrible for 50 minutes?). Pearl & Leo's passing scene. REALLY should have happened in Southend and Hal turning up at HH on his own.



But it felt very series 1 like all in all.

Pearl was not horrible; Pearl is an older version of Annie, wiser but just as much in denial as Annie. Contrary to Annie she never knew what was her unfinished business , hence we understand she never saw her door at all. she also was born to an era where having a stiff upper lip and self-denial was the norm.

Her attitude to Annie is simply a way to show that this is not 'her' home,; her 'home' is indeed with Hal and her Leo. Same goes for Leo who remained silent to her 'better' feelings for 55years and yet kept an old ad for an engagement ring for 50years in his pocket.

In those days, interracial marriages were ...rare. And we heard his comment on the plantation owner...This supernatural trinity worked by building for each and every of them a routine and each denying what they felt. For Hal: hunger=domino routine, Leo: werewolf=bound on a bed, Pearl ghost= perfect housewifery. They denied, they made it.

Plus we have Tom who now is the owner of the 'engagement ring' ad. Mitchell was sleeping in front of a poster showing a sunrise (hoping to redemption? hope of a new dawn?) , Tom replaces it as his hope for love. I wonder if having Tom in Mitchell's room and Hal in the 'bridal suite' (bridal must be significant somehow for HAL?) is not another way for Annie to learn to cope or rather to avoid coping, to carry on denying. The rooms will be occupied, life carries on, blah blah. As long as she denies, Annie is in pain. as long as she looks for a god, she loses her powers. When she accepts life with its downfalls, she is the wonderful smart Annie; as long as she refuses that pain is a part of life, she is on stupid pills. I like this imperfection, and I like to know Tom is a romantic looking for 'his' girl... I wonder who was Hal's sweetheart?

Please do not tell me that Future'woman is her re-incarnation???

I also think Tom did try to raise the subject with Annie but she said she wasn't discussing it now....or words to that effect. it was right before Tom said he was on her side.



Not everyone (ghost) will deal with losing people (wws or vamps) close to them in the same way. I lost my sister very suddenly when she was too young to die. I would no more have thought to discuss anything about her with people I'd just met than try to fly through the air without the aid of wings - no matter how similar their backgrounds might have seemed. It may not be the way you would deal (or would assume you would deal) with the death of someone close Ed but it is obviously Annie's. Personally, I can see where Annie is coming from here.



I'm glad you enjoyed episode better than last week. Hopefully, you'll enjoy episode 3 even more.

I too hope that Annie isn't on the stupid pills throughout the series. I suspect though that her suppressed grief may erupt at an opportune moment thus unleashing the immense power that's been hinted at but is as yet unseen.



I'm looking forward to Hal's character developing but have to say that Cutler is my favourite for now. His world weary cynicism cracks me up.

This letter had me laughing out loud. What a brilliant turn of phrase Hal has. And I am with him on the whole miniature animal front - it sounds ghastly (although I couldn't manage a whole budgie). Wonder who thought it was a good idea to take Hal to see the miniature circus? The whole thing has a certain League of Gentlemen quality as well.

So I was reading a book last (The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse) and I came across a line that reminded me so much of Hal that I knew I had to post it.

46: Sasha, good point; she's always been Annie, queen of denial. She probably feels responsible for Tom, and now everyone else too. She's holding things together as well as she can. I need to rewatch, and I expect I'll see a whole lot of what's going on with her

revealed in small ways.



59: Damien is certainly impossible to look away from! Interesting how you can really feel that violence just beneath the surface in Hal. With Mitchell you got blood lust, yes, but this is something different, a sense of power and detachment. Why exactly did Hal want to go clean in 1955?

Hi Fleem, I was just thinking exactly that. It's so much of a struggle for him, constantly, even after 50 years. Why did he want to go clean in the first place?

Cutler doesn`t strike me as a fighter,as can be seen in ep1 as soon as theres trouble he was off.If it is his voice from New York then he has created a powerful mythology for himself.

I also think that Cutler was recruited by Wyndham,as the old saying goes"knowledge is power"and when your immortal there is rather a lot of time to kill(sorry about the pun)

46. The old vampires have been around a while, certainly long enough to see phrases like "veni, vidi, vici"; "et tu, Brute?" and "mutatis mutandis" enter common parlance, the last one being especially pertinent to their usual line of work.



I don't remember Tom saying or doing anything to raise the topic: perhaps someone could provide a quote. I understand that Annie may deal with death in a different way than I would. But she has dealt with pain before: she showed anger when she learnt about Owen; she showed outrage when she learnt about Mitchell and the BT20. These are different scenarios, I'm happy to admit. But I don't recall anything actually showing us that Annie is in this state because nobody is raising the subject, neither her nor the other characters although I've given reasons how, when and why this could have happened. So we're back to a 'have faith, wait and see' when (or if) it happens.



I'd have loved it if Hal had asked her for the name of the vampire who used to live there. "Mitchell...?" muses Hal. "Used to hang around with a little bald chap...? Derek, or something....? Is he still doing that 'I've killed more people than you've met' speech?"

EG, Pearl barely gave Annie a chance to get a word in edgewise, though A seemed more than ready to talk about it. Did she even get to finish saying she'd had the same arrangement as they had?

Ghosts one-upmanship don`t you just love it.I liked Pearl,a no nonsense type of woman,one of her time.

75 - Because something is common parlance doesn't mean everyone gets it. My gran wouldn't necessarily take the same meaning from something that you do or even understand it at all.



Tom - “If this was just us, if this was something to help you to cope with everything that’s happened, then fine. Bu you’re dragging other people into it and that aint right. Eve can’t save that man.”

Annie - “After everything you’ve been through, why is it so difficult for you to believe?”

Annie - Makes small coughing sound and slightly turns away from Tom “I’m not going to argue about this with you Tom”

Annie – “Then please, just support me in this.”

78. Or it could be refusing to discuss the ceremony she is about to perform. It certainly wasn't clear to me when watching the show and the performances that this was referring to grief and it's still not clear in the script: she may cough and turn away because she's irritated with being argued with. I'd need to watch it again (for the third time). If it was about grief, having Tom ask: "This is about George, isn't it?" would have made the meaning much clearer without laying it on with a trowel.



Hopefully the Old Ones aren't you or your gran (or me?). But within the show, their age, the circles they've moved in, their interests, their language, I still find it stretched credibility that they wouldn't have heard of "et tu, Brute?" Have they never watched Carry on, Cleo?

Hello, I've never posted here before, but just had to say how brilliantly funny I think this is. I agree with 65 about the League of Gentlemen quality-could Papa Lazarou have been involved? Like many others, I loved the first three series and the original line up, but think that the BH team are doing a sterling job of this one, plus all these great little extras. Any chance of them being released on the dvd? If BH doesn't win lots of awards, then there's no justice!

Tom - “If this was just us, if this was something to help you to cope with everything that’s happened, then fine....." That for me is Tom referring to the deaths of Mitchell, George and Nina and has nothing whatsoever to do with the ceremony about to be performed. To me, this is clearly what is meant here but to you it isn't. I don't think I'm right and you are wrong, just that we see it differently and we're taking different things from the scenes written. I'm sure LT doesn't want a bunch of Stepford Wives watching the show and is relishing the amount of discussion on the blog. It would be boring if we all held the same opinion and more often than not I have read a post and thought *jeez, I didn't think of that!*.



There's another 6 episodes to go - maybe we'll agree on something somewhere along the line - stranger things have happened :-)

81 - Hello just-passing - And welcome to the Blog! I watched the BAFTA film awards last night on the iplayer and I was thinking about the BAFTAS TV awards coming up later in the year. I hope BeingHuman gets lots of nominations again this year, I really do (DON'T SHOOT ME!) But, I would especially like to see a nomination for the Casting Director - just a remarkable job when you think of all the fantastic young talent out there and yet - they sure know how to pick 'em.





I also thought the letter was very funny - the Script Editor, Laura Cotton has sent me a message to say that it was written by Jamie Mathieson - "a very funny guy" - Jamie is the the writer of the next episode of Being Human S4, called, 'The Graveyard Shift'. I hope he is reading this blog - I'm sure he will be delighted to know how much you loved it. I certainly did.



Can't wait for Ep 3 - written by Jamie.

Thanks for that Manc. Nice bit of info. Now I'm really, really, really looking forward to Ep3. I agree about the casting director. BH certainly does get some of the best young talent ( so to speak).

82. As I said, I'd probably need to watch it again. I didn't pick up on this when I watched it and thought it could have been made more explicit without being clumsy, but you may be right. And I still feel that other opportunities to show Annie's true feelings have been missed.

@fleem. Remember when Hal was leaning over the crib. His eyes weren't black bit he had a glazed expression and Future Lady was wiling him on through tv screen. It was as if he was oblivious to it all. But not in vamp mode. More like someone hypnotised or possessed.

Hals' storyline is something to very much looking forward to. The letter says it all, he has this sort of detatchment where the letter is written in all seriousness, but is really funny to the casual reader. He really does need to get out a little.



The kia ora incident.... I think its like the men with the sticks and ropes (? is that right) its just something that is dropped in there to intrigue. The stuff that fan fic dreams are made of.



Tom is funny and sad. He constantly looks like a pup that has been kicked in the nether regions.



I miss Annie and Mitchell I loved that. But then I miss the darling Irish vamp. But given that the writers are the same as is the person who gives impetus to the programme It should be fine. Is that the thing with all vamps who try to avoid food in human form that they all have tortured souls like a bunch of emo teenagers? We shall see.

But- was it only M that saw/ could see Annie on the tv and only Saul who could see and hear his own messages- ? Hal doesn't seem to realise FW is speaking to him( under a spell?) and Leo believed he heard the voice of an angel. No one questioned what he had heard as anything other than a delusion.

Here's a question - When a werewolf dies, do we think that just their human part goes through The Door or does the wolf stay with them? Forgive me if this has been asked before - it's hard to keep up sometimes.

Just wondered about the scrolls in general: they apparently record the five dreams that the original vampire brothers had so I wondered what do vampires dream about? What are their creation myths/mythology (clearly the last one is about a child which will kill all vampires, aka the war child) but what are the other four?

Jan - that is a very good question and 'no' to the best of my knowledge - that has never been asked before.



The only evidence we have is of McNair dying in S3 - he was a transformed werewolf when he died, but then changed into human form when dead (but we never saw him pass through his door) and George.



George was a half-transformed werewolf when he died - but when he passed through his door he was visually a human.



I'd like to think for both their sakes that just their human part goes through The Door.

You're right, MancVamp. I'd forgotten that they revert to human form if killed while fully transformed. I guess that implies that the wolf has completely gone. Thanks! It won't be tormenting me when I'm trying to get to sleep now.
