Oxegen 2011 - The Strokes
Friday, Vodafone Stage, 9.30pm
Describe in a Tweet: A performance worthy of headlining, but where's the crowd?
What happened: The Strokes in 2011 are a finely tuned musical machine. It's scary to believe that Is This It came out 10 years ago: a significant number of this crowd would have been toddlers when the band burst onto our musical radar. Over the course of those 10 years the Strokes have been a mixed bag in terms of their live performances, but no qualms could have been had in regards to their performance on the Vodafone Stage. Julian Casablancas' gruff and occasionally mumbling vocals are on top form while Albert Hammond Jr effortlessly reels off guitar solo after solo, demonstrating an incredible flair while showboating for the masses. There's no messing around when it comes to the setlist either, featuring the hits from their earlier material and (thankfully) not devoting their performance to promoting their new album. Hits like Reptilia, Take It Or Leave It and Hard To Explain were breathlessly fired out with little pause between tracks. Casablancas is possibly one of the most aloof men in the business and the lack of crowd interaction can come across as slightly grating, but the band do seem to be giving it their all in their own brash and loud way. The only sad point to note is the lack of a crowd: the rain is torrential and there serious competition for the Strokes on the other stages (with the Script, Tiga and Calvin Harris performing at the same time) but it does hamper the atmosphere somewhat. With Last Night we get a glimmer of what may have been as a few thousand take over on vocals for one track only, but the empty space at the back of the Vodafone Stage tells its own story.
Crazy In Love: Aside from Hammond's constant attempts to pull off an even more ridiculous lick than the previous riff, Under Cover Of Darkness stands out as a highlight. It's the one strong track from Angles, and can proudly stand on its own two feet in the face of the Strokes' fearsome back catalogue.
Why Don't You Love Me: I know the Strokes are far too cool for school but in the pouring rain, more acknowledgment of the crowd would be nice. It is a festival, after all.
Oxegen rating: 8/10
