MTV European Music Awards
Yesterday a very cryptic email came into the ATL inbox. The title read 'Major Announcement Regarding Music Event', and it came with very little detail other than that we had to be at the Waterfront in Belfast at 08:45am. So - quite rightly - the gossip in the office was rife. What music event? Why have we all been so hastily gathered? Does the time "08.45am" actually exist, and if so what does it mean?!? These all seemed like reasonable questions to us, and being the nosey parkers that we are, it meant that we were definitely going to get our sleepy keesters to the event.

After waking at an unholy hour, I arrived at the Waterfront with ATL Producer Amy McGarrigle, to the scene of numerous important looking suited types, free breakfast, and numerous signs reading ‘MTV EMA Awards Belfast 2011’. My initial thoughts turned to the breakfast bar, and how socially acceptable it would be to lift a tray of croissants and find a dark corner in which I could scoff all those dainty European treats. But then it hit me: Belfast is hosting the MTV EMA Awards! What?
Lethal! I can have a go on that meat dress of Gaga’s if I have the hunger after the event (presuming I get invited*).
Executive Vice President of MTV David Lynn and Executive Producer of the EMA awards Richard Godfrey took us through the very informative and flattering reasonings on why Belfast was chosen, citing the impressive proposal, the exciting music scene, and the much improved infrastructure as elements that helped seal the deal. What’s more impressive is that Belfast championed over London, Paris, and Stockholm. It seems third time’s the charm after two previously failed attempts in 2002 and 2005.
The Lord Mayor and tourist minister Arlene Foster also graced the pulpit, firing out superlatives like truth bullets, hammering optimistic prospects into our still sleepy heads. This all sounds great, where does ATL sign up?
In November when the EMA’s come to town, the whole of Northern will be bed wettingly nervous with anticipation. Will Rhianna collaborate with LaFaro? How long do you think it will take James Corden to sniff out Bishops? Will my dress of unicorn and dodo skin be too skimpy? Most importantly it means a lot to the community. The extra tourism dollars will help local business, the excitement will be great for everybody, and hopefully this will mean good things for local bands and events.
As Kanye West so eloquently put it, when he stormed the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, "Yo Belfast, I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but this ATL video is one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!"

*The sheer magnitude of us the blog is basically an invite in itself.
