Sir Terry Wogan
To commemorate the life and career of one of the UK’s most loved presenters, Sir Terry Wogan, plans to broadcast special tribute programmes on BBC One and BBC Radio 2 have been revealed. You can also read a blog from earlier this year including memories of the broadcasting legend.
New starters and departures
Rachel Jupp, Deputy Editor of Newsnight, has been appointed Editor of Panorama, in addition, Alison Kirkham has been confirmed in the role of Controller, Factual Commissioning. Meanwhile, Christine Langan, Head of BBC Films, is to leave the BBC to join Baby Cow Productions as its CEO.
Announcements and blogs
Drama
Filming began this week on the third series of BBC One’s hit Sunday night drama Poldark starring Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza.
Elsewhere, BBC One and Magic Light Pictures, have announced that an animated adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s children’s book The Highway Rat is in production and set to premiere on BBC One Christmas 2017.
Three event dramas, based on J.K. Rowling’s crime novels written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, are set for an autumn shoot in London.
British actor Tom Burke has been cast to star as Cormoran Strike in a major new TV series for BBC One.
Arts
Patrick Holland, Channel Editor, BBC Two, and Jonty Claypole, Director of BBC Arts, announced an ambitious run of Saturday nights on BBC Two throughout autumn 2016.
Comedy
After entertaining six million viewers at Christmas with Joanna Lumley, David Walliams will be back on BBC One with a new friend each week, as Walliams & Friend returns this autumn. The network also announced David Suchet as the narrator for Peter Pan Goes Wrong.
Factual
BBC Four announced four more programmes in his series James May: The Reassembler, for Christmas, once again slowly building everyday items from their component parts, and discovering what it takes to actually get them to work.
In addition, later this month BBC Two will air Conviction: Murder At The Station, following a team of experts as they investigate whether evidence exists that could challenge the conviction of a man in prison for a murder he denies.
Children's
Primary schools can take part in the biggest classroom in the UK this autumn term with three brand new BBC Live Lessons exploring music, literacy and science. These interactive live broadcasts, produced by BBC Learning, bring the curriculum to life in a unique and innovative way and support schools and teachers to deliver key learning objectives.
Sport
A new season of NFL coverage was announced to begin on the BBC next week with a host of extra content for American Football and sports fans.
Radio
An opinion poll for BBC Radio 5 live has suggested more than six out of 10 (62 percent) adults in the UK are positive about Britain’s future following the referendum result.
Meanwhile, 6 Music Live returns this October with a brand new format, bringing two whole days of performances from 10 artists live to air.
Elsewhere, in the week of the Helen/Rob trial in The Archers on Radio 4 court Artist Julia Quenzler's illustratrations were revealed. As were an acclaimed cast including Dame Eileen Atkins, Nigel Havers, Graham Seed, Catherine Tate, Rakhee Thakrar as well as Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Cerith Flinn and Tam Williams to feature in an extended hour-long Jury Special.
Digital/iPlayer
Emma Rice’s inaugural production as Artistic Director at Shakespeare’s Globe, of A Midsummer Night's Dream, is to be broadcast around the world for audiences to enjoy for free as part of Shakespeare Lives, the online digital festival co-curated by the BBC and the British Council.
Regional
To commemorate 50 years since the Aberfan disaster, which touched people around the world, BBC Wales has announced a series of commemorative programmes.
Meanwhile, BBC Northern Ireland will host a series of BBC talks, discussions and events on the subject of international affairs and diplomacy as part of the inaugural Mount Stewart Conversations on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September.
Blogs
The blog team were on the red carpet for the TV Choice awards, and reported on all the BBC winners. In a starry week we also covered a screening in Manchester of the new series of BBC One's Our Girl attended by star Michelle Keegan.
As The One Show celebrated 10 years, reporter Gyles Brandreth shared some of his most memorable moments. Jonathan Wells and Deborah Basckin producers of BBC World Service, BBC World News television and bbc.com programme series: Living Shakespeare, shared the background to the series and contributors.
Finally, on the day of it's launch, Jo Kent (Business Analyst, BBC Radio & Music Multiplatform) explained how ADA (Automated Data Architecture) was developed to navigate the BBC’s rich archive of permanently available programmes.
