Join the biggest classroom in the UK with a new timetable of BBC Live Lessons
Primary schools can take part in the biggest classroom in the UK this autumn term with three brand new BBC Live Lessons exploring music, literacy and science. These interactive live broadcasts, produced by BBC Learning, bring the curriculum to life in a unique and innovative way and support schools and teachers to deliver key learning objectives.

This term’s timetable of new Live Lessons shows BBC Learning’s dedication to creating innovative and engaging educational content and will cover subjects that I know will be of real value to primary school teachers and pupils throughout the UK.
Live Lessons build on the BBC's great legacy of schools programming, bringing it up to date for the digital age. Pupils and teachers across the UK can take part in the live lessons wherever they are via the online stream at bbc.co.uk/livelessons. Teachers are also supported with curriculum relevant resources and activities from experts for their pupils to do. All of the broadcast Live Lessons, as well as the supporting resources, are then available on the website.
Sinéad Rocks, Head of BBC Learning, says: “This term’s timetable of new Live Lessons shows BBC Learning’s dedication to creating innovative and engaging educational content and will cover subjects that I know will be of real value to primary school teachers and pupils throughout the UK.”
Ten Pieces Party – presented by CBBC’s Karim Zeroual and Lauren Layfield
In the first Live Lesson this term, pianist and composer and CBBC Ten Pieces ambassador Julian Joseph will be joined by conductor Clark Rundell and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a special BBC Live Lesson: Ten Pieces Party from BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre. This Live Lesson on 23 September will celebrate two years of Ten Pieces and is aimed at Key Stage 2/Second Level primary children. It will teach the building blocks of composition; rhythm, melody, tempo and dynamics, whilst the charismatic Julian Joseph will lead the children in composing their own ‘Ten Pieces Party Piece.’ By the end, children will have accomplished their own short composition inspired by music from Bernstein’s ‘Mambo’ from Symphonic Dances from ‘West Side Story’, Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 (3rd Movement) and Mussorgsky’s A Night on the Bare Mountain.
Julian Joseph, pianist and composer, says: “Helping kids all over the country discover their inner composer is a challenge I welcome with open arms. The result being primary children inspired to create a short piece over a 50 minute Live Lesson!
"Composition is something we can all have a go at and it’s incredible what can be achieved just by understanding some of the basic building blocks. I'm looking forward to creating a brand new piece that will inspire the children and their teachers to come up with more compositions of their own as they listen to more and more great music.”
CBeebies: Stories by the Sea – presented by CBeebies’ Chris Jarvis and Pui Fan Lee
Later in the term, on 11 October, BBC Live Lessons will be partnering with BookTrust, the largest children’s reading charity in Britain, to bring the joy of storytelling to a 5-7 year olds for the first time in CBeebies: Stories by the Sea. Themed around CBeebies’ Old Jack’s Boat: Rockpool Tales and its underwater characters, pupils will learn how to write the beginning, middle and end of their own story.
Diana Gerald, CEO BookTrust, says; “We are thrilled to be partnering with CBeebies: Stories by the Sea to help bring the immeasurable joy of creating stories and books to children. We are passionate about encouraging children to love stories and reading, and teaming up with BBC Live Lessons is such an exciting way to engage children in storytelling.”
BBC Learning Science Live Lesson
In the final Live Lesson of this term on 17 November, CBBC HQ will be getting to grips with all things science focusing on ‘how to be a scientist’ aimed at 9-11 year olds. Our Science Live Lesson aims to introduce simple science experiments through interactive activities that students can get involved with in their classrooms.
