Taskmaster: What the Must Watch reviewers think

This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on Channel 4's Taskmaster.

Scott says: "It's an enjoyable slow burn"

“It’s so weird because it feels like a new show, but it’s actually been around for nine series. Now it’s made its debut on Channel 4, having switched from Dave, it feels like it’s starting all over again. I think if you’re watching Taskmaster for the first time, you’re thinking to yourself, 'goodness this show looks cheap'! I also don't think that they started with the best task either, but stick around, it's an enjoyable slow burn.

“Unlike other panel shows on TV, all of the contributors stick around for the whole ten weeks, allowing in-jokes to occur. Taskmaster plays on people’s intelligence and those moments in a crisis, when you are so stressed or pressured that you feel like you're having an out-of-body experience, and you only realise how weird you look when someone else points it out. It makes you look back at all of those moments and go, 'I was a right idiot'.

“For example, the other day I was thinking, ‘I’m a smart person, I’ve got a degree’, but when I was filling in a form I put my birth date where you put your address, and I only realised about two hours later.”

Hayley says: "It’s as fun as usual"

“Yes it’s a 'must watch'. I find this show charming and, aside from the studio audience being in another room, it is pretty much the same show despite changing channels. The tasks are already done and filmed elsewhere, so the actual bulk of the show is what we’ve come to know already. It’s as fun as usual and I particularly like it when something happens that makes Greg Davies laugh so much that his face goes bright pink. It feels like a real laugh rather than a game show laugh.

“In the first episode there is an egg task. I sat there maybe for two hours afterwards watching other things, but I was still thinking about how I would have done the egg task. I went through lots of different plans and I think I may have cracked it... Not like that.”
