Snoot and Fin use multiples of ten to help work out how much food their farm animals need.
(SPACESHIP ENGINE)
NARRATOR: Hello you two.
You’re on the farm, I see.
SNOOT: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: A grumbledorp farm, you say?
OK…
(GRUNTING)
NARRATOR: What an interesting animal!
(SIRENS)
NARRATOR: That must mean feeding time.
Are you going to help feed the herd?
How many grumbledorps need feeding?
There are 6 pens with 30 grumbledorps in each.
What’s 6 times 30?
SNOOT: Er… Uh…
NARRATOR: I know Snoot, it is quite a tricky sum.
You can make it easier by thinking of 30 as 3 times 10.
Then multiply 6 by the 3, which makes 18, and multiply 18 by the 10.
18 times 10 equals 180 grumbledorps altogether.
Let’s see what’s in the barn…
It looks like one sack is enough for 20 grumbledorps.
If you’ve got 180 to feed, how many sacks will you need?
SNOOT: Er… Wi… Oo…
NARRATOR: If you’re dividing numbers that end in a zero, you can start by dividing them by 10.
180 divided by 10 is 18, and 20 divided by 10 is 2.
Then you just need to divide 18 by 2, which equals 9.
BOTH: Aha!
NARRATOR: OK then, we’ve got our 9 sacks of feed.
Let’s go feed some grumbledorps!
(BUZZING ENGINE)
(CRASH)
NARRATOR: Ah… I think we’re going to need a bigger tractor.
What are multiples of ten?
Numbers like 2, 3 or 5 are quite small and straightforward.
Numbers like 20, 30 or 50 are bigger and the 0 at the end might seem confusing.
We call these numbers multiples of ten because we can think of them as numbers of groups of ten:
20 is 2 groups of 10
30 is 3 groups of 10
50 is 5 groups of 10
How can you multiply by multiples of 10?
If you have to multiply by 20, remember that this is 2 groups of 10, or 2 x 10.
So you might find it easier to multiply by 2 first, then multiply your answer by 10.
Example
3 x 40 = ?
Remember that 40 is the same as 4 x 10
So first do 3 x 4 = 12
Then multiply this by 10
12 x 10 = 120
You've just worked out that 3 x 40 = 120
What about dividing? You can do something similar when dividing. First divide by the number of groups of 10, then divide by 10.
Example
140 ÷ 20 = ?
Remember that 20 is the same as 2 x 10
So first do 140 ÷ 2 = 70
Then divide this by 10
70 ÷ 10 = 7
You've just worked out that 140 ÷ 20 = 7
Well done.
