Snoot is shopping for blobs and eyeballs. He uses multiplication to find their total cost.
NARRATOR: Hello Snoot, I see you’re shopping.
What are you buying?
SNOOT: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: Oh, lovely.
Eyeballs and blobs…
What do you need those for?
SNOOT: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: Blob-eye cupcakes?
Sounds delicious…
How many eyeballs and blobs do you have?
SNOOT: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: I see, you’ve got 5 of each.
FIN: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: Good point, Fin.
How much is this all going to cost?
SNOOT: Er… Wi… Ooh…
NARRATOR: Let’s see, you’ve got 5 eyeballs and 5 blobs.
The eyeballs are 3 credits each and the blobs are 2 credits each.
Add those 2 prices together.
3 add 2 equals 5.
Now all you need to do is multiply by 5, because remember you’ve got 5 of each.
5 times 5 is 25.
SNOOT: Oh… Wi… Er… Ooh…
NARRATOR: Yes, it is a bit tricky…
FIN: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: OK Fin, how would you do it?
Oh I see, separate the eyeballs and blobs like that, then multiply them by what they cost.
5 eyeballs times 3 credits equals 15, and 5 blobs times 2 credits equals 10.
Then just add those two numbers together.
15 add 10 equals 25.
BOTH: Aha!
NARRATOR: Well done you two.
This is a great example how to do the same sum in 2 different ways.
3 add 2 times 5 is the same as 5 times 3 add 5 times 2.
It doesn’t matter which way round you do it, you get 25 every time.
Now then, who’s going to pay?
Oh… just enough for 2 blobs.
Blob pudding all round then!
How can I multiply a group of numbers?
There are two different ways to multiply a group of numbers by another number.
You could multiply each number separately and then add them together
Or you could add the numbers together first and then multiply.
Example
How much is two groups of three and two groups of four put together?
You can do this as 2 x 3 = 6 and 2 x 4 = 8.
Then add these together.
6 + 8 = 14
You can also do this by adding first. 3 + 4 = 7.
Then multiply 2 x 7 = 14
The answer is the same, so use whichever way seems better for you.
