Snoot shares his slime loaf equally with Fin, Plimble and Plumble by halving it twice.
NARRATOR: Hello Snoot.
What have you got there?
SNOOT: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: A slime loaf, you say?
Looks… delicious…
Hello Fin, hello Plimble.
PLIMBLE: Plimble!
NARRATOR: You’re just in time for a freshly-baked slime loaf.
Hello, who’s this?
PLIMBLE: Erm… Plumble?
NARRATOR: I didn’t know you had a twin.
Great, the more the merrier.
Let’s share this slime loaf between the four of you, shall we?
SNOOT: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: Your slime loaf is 36 centiblarples long.
So, to share it equally between the 4 of you, we’re going to have to divide 36 by 4.
SNOOT: Er… Wi… Oo…
NARRATOR: Yes, it is quite a hard sum.
FIN: (ALIEN LANGUAGE)
NARRATOR: Alright Fin, show us how you’d work it out.
Ah, I see.
You want to start by cutting the slime loaf in half.
36 divided by 2 makes 2 lots of 18.
Then all you have to do is cut the halves in half again to make 4 equal shares.
18 divided by 2 is 9, which means you get 9 centiblarples of slime loaf each.
ALL: Aha!
NARRATOR: That’s a great way of working out how to divide by 4.
If it seems too hard at first, just start by dividing by 2 and then divide by 2 again to get the answer.
Well, I hope the 4 of you each enjoy your slice of slime loaf.
(ZAP)
Ah… I think Plimble may have just played a little trick on you.
PLIMBLE: Plimble!
(BURPING)
Make dividing by even numbers easier
Do you think dividing by 4 is tricky?
It can be easier if you split the number you are dividing in half.
Another way of saying this is dividing by 2
To turn this into dividing by 4, just split each half in half again.
So what you are doing is dividing by 2 and then dividing by 2 again.
Example
24 ÷ 4 = ?
First split 24 in half.
24 ÷ 2 = 12
Then split this in half again.
12 ÷ 2 = 6
So 24 ÷ 4 = 6
What about 8?
If you have to divide by 8, you just split your number in half again.
So you divide by 2 then divide by 2 again then divide by 2 another time.
24 ÷ 8 can be done as
24 ÷ 2 = 12
12 ÷ 2 = 6
6 ÷ 2 = 3
