Parenthesis

What is parenthesis?

Parenthesis is adding extra information to a sentence using:

  • dashes –
  • brackets ( )
  • commas ,

What is parenthesis? How and why would you use it? Bitesize explains with examples from ‘The Bargain’ by Liz Lochhead.

Examples of parenthesis

  • Michael, on the other hand, could not be trusted. By adding on the other in parenthesis we learn that Michael is untrustworthy by comparison to someone else.
  • John (this year’s loser) appeared at the foot of the podium. By having this year's loser in brackets, we have more information about John's place in the race.

Question
