A noun is a naming word used for a person, thing, place or idea. The word for ‘the’ or ‘a’ changes depending on the gender of the noun and whether it is singular or plural.

Un and une mean ‘a’ or ‘an’, and are used with a . Un is used with nouns and une with nouns. Use des (some) when the noun is , regardless of gender.

No is needed when talking about jobs, or if you are a member of a team. For example:

  • Je voudrais être médecin. – I would like to be a doctor.
  • Mon père est prof de français. – My dad is a French teacher.
  • Je suis membre de l’équipe de foot de l’école – I am a member of my school football team.
