Perimeter and areaRectangles

In this National 4 Lifeskills Maths study guide, you can revise how to find the perimeter and area of triangles, quadrilaterals (rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, kite and square), circles, arcs, sectors and composite shapes can all be calculated using relevant formulae.

Rectangles

Perimeter of a rectangle

Opposite sides of a rectangle are equal in length.

Diagram of a rectangle depicting length and breadth labels

Example

Diagram of a rectangle and its length and breadth values

\(Perimeter = 6\,+\,3\,+6\,+\,3=18cm\)

Area of a rectangle

The area of a rectangle can be found by multiplying the length by the breadth.

\(Area = length \times breadth\)

Example

Diagram of a rectangle and its length and breadth values

\(Area = length \times breadth\)

\(Area = 6cm \times 3cm\)

\(Area = 18c{m^2}\)
