Saving the planet

Recycling is taken very seriously in German-speaking countries. In both Austria and Germany, people recycle more in comparison to most other European countries.

In Switzerland, households have to pay to have their rubbish collected. So, the more bags of rubbish a household produces, the more it costs to have it taken away.

However, recycling is free in Switzerland, so it encourages people to be more environmentally-friendly – umweltfreundlich – and produce less household waste.

A useful verb to learn is the English borrowing recyceln. But make sure you pronounce all forms of the verb properly in German. Here's how to conjugate the verb in the present tense:

recyceln

ich recycle

du recyclest

er recycelt

sie recycelt

es recycelt

wir recyceln

Sie recyceln

ihr recycelt

sie recyceln
