Setting goals and planning training will help develop the performance of an athlete. These skills will be used in developing different approaches in performance.

FITT

FITT - Frequency (calendar with dates circled), Intensity (heart rate monitor), Time (stopwatch), Type (skipper and weight trainer)

The FITT acronym highlights the key things to consider when tailoring programmes for individual sporting goals.

In planning a programme, use the FITT principles to add the detail:

  • F - Frequency - how often to train
  • I - Intensity - how hard to train
  • T - Time - how long to train
  • T - Type - which approaches to training to use

Also consider the principle of moderation. It is important to have rest periods that allow the body to adapt. Too much training (overtraining) can lead to injury.
