To ensure that customers enjoy their hospitality experience, they must feel safe. Employees must also feel protected so they can carry out their job efficiently and there are a number of laws that protect all parties.

Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations

All accidents or serious incidents that happen in the work place must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

These include:

  • Death
  • Major injuries
  • Accidents
  • Diseases – dermatitis, asthma, infectious diseases
  • Gas incidents

Records should be kept for:

  • The date, time and place of event
  • The personal details of those involved
  • Brief description of the nature of the event or disease
  • Date and method of reporting the injury, disease or dangerous occurrence

Employers must report:
  • Work related deaths.
  • Injuries – including loss of limbs and eyesight
  • Any accident which results in an employee being off work for more than 3 days
  • Work related diseases e.g. skin and lung diseases
  • Dangerous Occurrences e.g. collapse of building and explosion
  • Take reasonable care of own safety
  • Not put other employees at risk of danger
  • Not misuse equipment or machinery
  • Follow all safety rules set in place by the company

The Health and Safety Executive will investigate accidents, identify where they are happening and help to take action to prevent them from reoccurring.
