Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
This piece of legislation relates to the use and storage of dangerous substances. Incorrect use of hazardous substances can cause:
- Skin irritation or dermatitis
- Asthma
- Loss of consciousness
- Cancer (may appear a long time after a person has been exposed to the substance)
- Infection
All chemicals and substances used within the establishment must be surveyed and a COSHH register should be kept.
Substances should be labelled ‘very toxic’, ‘toxic’, ‘harmful’, ‘irritant’, or ‘corrosive’.
Employers’ must complete a risk assessment in relation to all substances.
