Going to the gym

Do you remember how to invite a friend to go somewhere with you? Look at Going out for a meal and Going to the cinema.

Question

So how would you invite a friend to go to the gym with you?

You could then ask what your friend intends to do at the gym tonight:

Beth wyt ti'n mynd i wneud yn y gampfa heno? – What are you going to do in the gym tonight?

He/she could answer by saying:

Dw i’n mynd i… - I am going to…

Dw i'n mynd i redeg. – I’m going to run.

Dw i'n mynd i . – I’m going to lift weights.

Dw i'n mynd i gael gwers baffio. – I’m going to have a boxing lesson.

Wel, dw i ddim yn mynd i weithio fy heno. – Well, I’m not going to work my legs tonight!

If you wanted to refer to a specific machine at the gym, you could use the word peiriant, eg:

Dw i’n mynd i redeg ar y peiriant rhedeg. – I’m going to run on the running machine.

Dw i’n mynd i seiclo ar y peiriant seiclo. – I’m going to cycle on the cycling machine.

Dw i’n mynd i rwyfo ar y peiriant rhwyfo. – I’m going to row on the rowing machine.

A customer is offered different things by a salon assistant - which one will he accept?

Favourite exercises

While at the gym, you could ask each other about your favourite exercises, eg:

  • Beth ydy dy hoff ymarfer corff di? – What is your favourite exercise?
  • Beth wyt ti’n hoffi gwneud yn y gampfa? – What do you like to do in the gym?

Here are some possible answers to the above questions:

  • Dw i’n hoffi codi pwysau achos mae’n her. – I like to lift weights because it’s a challenge.
  • Dw i’n hoffi rhwyfo achos mae’n fy nghadw i’n heini. – I like to row because it keeps me fit.
  • Dw i’n hoffi boxercise achos mae’n hwyl. – I like boxercise because it’s fun.
  • Fy hoff ymarfer corff i ydy rhedeg. – My favourite exercise is running.

How could you improve on these answers?

  • You could provide a longer answer by using the link words a and acand, eg: Dw i’n hoffi codi pwysau achos mae’n her a dw i’n hoffi rhwyfo achos mae’n fy nghadw i’n heini. - I like to lift weights because it’s a challenge and I like to row because it keeps me fit.
  • You could provide a longer answer by using the expression ond weithiaubut sometimes, eg: Dw i’n hoffi codi pwysau achos mae’n her ond weithiau dw i’n hoffi rhwyfo achos mae’n fy nghadw i’n heini. - I like to lift weights because it’s a challenge but sometimes I like to row because it keeps me fit.
  • You could also include some idioms such as nawr ac yn y mannow and again, eg: Dw i’n hoffi paffio ond nawr ac yn y man, dw i’n hoffi rhedeg. - I like boxing but now and again I like to run.

You could use:

  • Dw i'n teimlo'n flinedig. – I feel tired.
  • Dw i'n teimlo'n llawn egni. – I feel full of energy.
  • Dw i'n chwyslyd iawn! – I am very sweaty!

Exercise

How about texting a friend to ask Wyt ti eisiau mynd i’r gampfa wythnos nesaf? It would be a great way to keep fit and a good opportunity to practise your Welsh too.
