Going to the cinema

If you wanted to arrange a trip to the cinema, you might want to:

  • invite someone
  • discuss different types of films

Before reading on, can you think of a sentence pattern you could use for each of the above points?

How to invite someone

If you would like to ask someone to go to the cinema with you, you could ask...

Wyt ti eisiau mynd i’r sinema? – Do you want to go to the cinema?

Wyt ti eisiau mynd i’r sinema gyda fi? – Do you want to go to the cinema with me?

Wyt ti eisiau gwylio ffilm yn y sinema? – Do you want to watch a film in the cinema?

Hoffet ti ddod i’r sinema? – Would you like to come to the cinema?

Hoffet ti ddod i’r sinema gyda fi? – Would you like to come to the cinema with me?

Question

Do you remember how to answer these questions?

Discussing different types of film

You may want to ask what types of films your friend likes to watch:

Pa fath o ffilmiau wyt ti’n hoffi? – What type of films do you like?

Question

Below are genres of films in Welsh:

  • ffilmiau arswyd
  • ffilmiau rhamantus
  • ffilmiau cartŵn
  • ffilmiau cowboi
  • ffilmiau rhyfel
  • ffilmiau ffug-wyddonol

Match the Welsh words with these images.

Six screens showing six different film genres. A: Romantic, B: Sci-fi, C: Horror, Ch: Cartoon, D: Western, Dd: War.

How would you answer the question Pa fath o ffilmiau wyt ti’n hoffi? in a full sentence? Try to provide a reason for your opinion, eg:

Pa fath o ffilmiau wyt ti’n hoffi?

Dw i’n hoffi ffilmiau cartŵn achos maen nhw’n ddoniol fel arfer a dw i’n hoffi .

When arranging to go and see a film, you could therefore ask:

Pa fath o ffilm hoffet ti wylio? – What type of film would you like to watch?

The above question contains the conditional tense Hoffet ti...? – Would you like to...? When answering in a full sentence, you need to start by using Hoffwn i … – I would like..., eg:

  • Hoffwn i wylio ffilm gomedi. – I would like to watch a comedy film.
  • Hoffwn i wylio ffilm arswyd. – I would like to watch a horror film.
  • Hoffwn i wylio ffilm gomedi neu ffilm gartŵn. – I would like to watch a comedy film or a cartoon film.

Listen to the following conversation in which Matt, Lucy and Siôn discuss going to the cinema.

Question

What kind of film does each character like and why?

Exercise

Why not invite some friends to go to the cinema with you? You could discuss what type of film you would like to see and you could also discuss the possibility of eating out afterwards.
