Socialising at a party

What kind of language would you need in order to be able to socialise at a party?

You would possibly need to:

  • greet people
  • invite someone to dance
  • ask someone whether they want something to eat or drink
  • express opinions – possibly about the food, the music and the party in general

List some language patterns that could help you deal with these situations in Welsh.

Now, listen to this conversation between Erin and Dan, who are at a party:

Listen again, but this time listen to how they greet each other and how Dan asks Erin to dance and then asks her whether she wants some food. Read the transcript to follow the conversation closely.

They could also express opinions about the party, eg:

  • Mae’r bwyd yn flasus. – The food is delicious.
  • Mae’r gerddoriaeth yn fywiog. – The music is lively.
  • Dw i’n hoffi’r gerddoriaeth achos dw i’n hoffi dawnsio i’r gerddoriaeth yma. – I like the music because I like dancing to this music.
  • Dw i’n meddwl bod y parti’n wych achos mae’r bwyd yn flasus, mae’r gerddoriaeth yn wych ac mae popeth yn ffantastig. – I think that the party is great because the food is delicious, the music is great and everything is fantastic.

Why not discuss going to a party with a friend in Welsh? You could then role-play a situation where you are at the party.

This guide has concentrated on socialising before and during a party. Look at Arranging a party or a similar event for more information about how to arrange a party.
