Reading and Translation – At the Doctor’s/Pharmacy
Past pupils are interviewed for a school magazine and talk about their work in medicine and pharmacy. Read their statements and answer the following questions.

Sylvie: J’adore travailler comme médecin - chaque jour je vois des patients avec beaucoup de maladies différentes. En hiver beaucoup de gens viennent au cabinet avec des grippes et des rhumes. En été il y a des maladies différentes - des insolations et des piqûres d’insecte. Le tabagisme est un grand problème en Irlande du Nord et nous aidons les gens à cesser de fumer et à rester en bonne santé.

Sylvie: I love working as a doctor – every day I see patients with lots of different illnesses. In winter many people come to the surgery with flu and colds - some have fevers and serious coughs. In summer there are different illnesses –sunstroke and insect bites. Smoking is a big health problem in Northern Ireland, and we help people to stop and become healthy.

Marc: Travailler dans aux urgences est un défi. Beaucoup des malades sont blessés quand ils arrivent. Certains sont soûls, se sont drogués et se sont blessés dans un accident. Le weekend dernier un jeune garçon a grimpé sur le toit d’une cuisine et il s’est cassé la jambe en sautant du toit. Il y a beaucoup de problèmes avec la drogue en Irlande du Nord et donc l’hôpital est toujours très occupé, surtout le weekend.

Marc: Working in Accident and Emergency is challenging. A lot of the patients are injured when they arrive. Some are drunk, have taken take drugs and were injured by accident. Last weekend a young boy climbed up onto a kitchen roof and broke his leg when he jumped. There is a lot of drug abuse in Northern Ireland and the hospital is therefore very busy, especially at weekends.

Anna: Au lycée j’adorais la chimie, c’était ma matière préférée. J’aime préparer les ordonnances pour les clients. Je dois choisir les comprimés et les médicaments corrects pour les malades. En Irlande du Nord les pharmaciens donnent aussi des conseils au grand public sur la santé et ils peuvent aussi donner des conseils sur des médicaments et des traitements. Dans ma pharmacie nous vendons beaucoup de pastilles pour la gorge et beaucoup de sirop pour la toux.

Translation:
Anna: I loved chemistry at school it was my favourite subject. I like making prescriptions for customers. I must choose the correct pills and correct medicine for the patients. In Northern Ireland pharmacists also advise the public on how to improve their health and can also give advice on medicines and treatments. In my pharmacy we sell a lot of cough mixture and lozenges.
