The passive voice - using in a sentence

Using the passive voice

Use the passive voice when you don’t know who is doing an action, or to emphasise that an action is being done to something or someone, rather than focusing on who or what is doing the action. For example:

  • Le bâtiment a été construit en 1990. – The building was built in 1990. (We don’t know who built the building.)
  • La chanson est chantée par ma sœur. – The song is being sung by my sister. (The emphasis is on the action of singing rather than the person who is singing.)

Put the following sentences into the passive voice.

Example:

Ses amis la respectent. – Elle est respectée par ses amis. - Her friends respect her. - She is respected by her friends.
