Adjectives – position and agreement

An explanation of how French adjectives must agree with their nouns with regard to their gender and plurality

Position of adjectives

Most adjectives in French come after the noun, unlike in English. For example:

  • la jupe rouge - the red skirt (literally, in English, the skirt which is red)
  • c’est un dessert anglais - it’s an English dessert

Agreement of adjectives

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. In French, adjectives must agree with their noun, which means that they have to show whether they are masculine or feminine and singular or plural to match the noun.

  • il porte une veste blanche - he’s wearing a white jacket
  • il y a des recettes délicieuses dans ce livre - there are delicious recipes in this book
