Finding simple information in a written text

Read the following instructions for a reading task:

Mae Siôn a Martha yn trefnu diwrnod i godi arian at elusen. Darllenwch am y diwrnod ac yna atebwch y cwestiynau sy’n dilyn.

Siôn and Martha are arranging a day to raise money for a charity. Read about the day and then answer the questions that follow.

Remember: It’s very important to read the instructions carefully, mainly so that you understand what to do but you may also be able to find some useful Welsh vocabulary that will help you.

Question

Which expression means to raise money for a charity? (Use the wording of the instruction to help you!)

Read about Siôn and Martha’s day:

Rydyn ni, Siôn a Martha, yn chwaraeon ar ddydd Sadwrn Medi 6, i godi arian at Hosbis Tre Owain. Rydyn ni eisiau eich help chi os gwelwch yn dda. Rydyn ni’n trefnu dau beth ar gyfer y diwrnod:

  1. pêl-droedyn y ganolfan hamdden. Rydyn ni eisiau plant ysgol i chwarae yn y twrnamaint o ddeg o’r gloch y bore tan bedwar o’r gloch y prynhawn. Bydd staff y ganolfan hamdden yn gwerthu bwyd a diod i godi arian.
  2. Nofio yn y pwll nofio. Wrth gwrs, rhaid gallu nofio’n dda. os ydych chi eisiau.

Rydyn ni’n codi dau gan punt.

The task is to write a paragraph in Welsh that will provide the information about this event. You need to include the following information:

Codi arian at beth? ____________________________________

Dyddiad? ____________________________________

Twrnamaint pêl-droed: Ble? ____________________________________

Faint o’r gloch?O _______ tan________________________

Nofio noddedig. Ble? ____________________________________

Rhaid gallu? ____________________________________

Eisiau codi £______

Remember: The information must come from the reading passage and you should use full sentences.

Before you start writing, prepare thoroughly as this will save you time, eg:

  • Ble? questions will require a reference to a place; the Faint o’r gloch? question will require a reference to a time etc.
  • You could underline the key words in the text to help you find the information when writing.
  • Only write the relevant information in your answer to avoid wasting time.
  • There’s no need to change the person or the tense when writing this answer.
  • After you have written your paragraph, check that you have included all the information required in the list.

Why not try this exercise? Remember to give all of the information asked for in the instructions.

Example answer

Rydyn ni’n codi arian at Hosbis Tre Owain dydd Sadwrn Medi 6. Rydyn ni’n trefnu twrnamaint pêl-droed pump-pob-ochr yn y ganolfan hamdden o ddeg o’r gloch y bore tan bedwar o’r gloch y prynhawn. Hefyd, rydyn ni’n gwneud nofio noddedig yn y pwll nofio. Rhaid gallu nofio’n dda. Rydyn ni’n gobeithio codi dau gan punt.

Exercise

Now, write a short letter responding to the information you’ve read about the fundraising day:

  1. Ydych chi eisiau mynd i’r diwrnod chwaraeon?
  2. Pam?

When writing this short letter, you must answer the question, Ydych chi eisiau mynd i’r diwrnod chwaraeon? (Do you want to go to the sports day?) by saying yes or no in Welsh. You must then explain why by referring to the information contained in the text.

Example answers

Ydw, dw i eisiau mynd i’r diwrnod chwaraeon achos dw i’n hoffi chwarae pêl-droed a dw i wrth fy modd yn nofio.

Nac ydw, dw i ddim eisiau mynd i’r diwrnod chwaraeon achos mae’n gas gen i chwarae pêl-droed ac, yn fy marn i, mae nofio’n ddiflas.
