Responding to written materials – the environment
What about putting into practice some of the ideas you have looked at in this guide?
Read this paragraph taken from an article in a papur bro – community newspaper – about a council’s decision to grant permission to open a chip shop near a school.
SIOP SGLODION ARALL!
Mae’r cyngorcouncil wedi rhoi caniatâdpermission i agor siop sglodion newydd ym Mhontardawe, y bumed siop o fewnwithin milltir i’r ysgol. Yn ôl Mr Lewis, athro sy’n gweithio yn yr ysgol lleollocal, mae’n broblem fawr iawn. "Mae’n broblem mewn llawer o ardal - ardaloeddarea - areas eraill, hefyd," dywedodd Mr Lewis. "Dydy’r cyngor - cynghoraucouncil - councils ddim yn poeni am y sefyllfasituation, mae’n amlwg, ac mae hyn yn warthus! Mae gordewdra’n broblem fawr a dylai cynghorau Cymru - a phawb arall - wneud rhywbeth i ceisioto trydatrysto solve y broblem!
Read the article carefully. Read it aloud. Some words are explained in the glossary, but are there any other words that seem unfamiliar?
- What is y bumed siop? Say the word bumed aloud. Could it be mutated? Does it sound like another word? What about a number?
- What is gordewdra? Say it aloud. Is there a word or are there words in that one word that you know? Think of the context – chip shops and problems associated with chip shops.

So what is the meaning of these words?
- y bumed - pumed means fifth and has been mutated
- gordewdra
- y bumed – the fifth. The Welsh word for five is pump.
- gordewdra – obesity. The Welsh word for fat is tew. Now, look at the other little component – gor – as in gormod – too much.
Read the passage again and then answer these questions. Remember to look for key words in the questions and the passage to help you and remember to look carefully at the first word in each question.

If you wanted to discuss these opinions in a group situation, you could ask each other:
- Beth mae Alun yn ddweud? – What does Alun say?
- Wyt ti’n cytuno gyda Siân? – Do you agree with Siân?
- Gyda phwy wyt ti’n cytuno? – Who do you agree with?
- Pam? – Why?
- Beth ydy dy farn di? – What’s your opinion?
Why not try this in a group? Remember the expressions:
- fel... – like...
- yn wahanol i... – unlike...
Try to include some Welsh phrases or idioms in your answer in order to sound like a fluent Welsh speaker.

Dw i ddim yn cefnogito support siop sglodion newydd achos mae llawer o siopau sglodion yn yr ardal yn barodalready! Agorodd siop sglodion arall yn yr ardal yn ddiweddarrecently ac yn bendant, mae’n broblem fawr. Dw i’n bwyta sglodion nawr ac yn y man ond dw i’n gwybod bod gormod o sglodion ddim yn dda i chi! Hefyd, mae’r siopau yma’n achosito cause problemau gyda sbwriel. Dw i’n gweld llawer o bacedi sglodion ar y llawr – mae’n warthus!

Which response is better and why?
Ben’s answer is better as he has given evidence to support what he says – he refers to the chip packets on the floor, for example. He has also included a number of Welsh phrases which give a Welsh flavour to his language.
