Responding to a text: how do you compare with the writer?

Look again at what Will wrote:

A bod yn onest, dydw i ddim yn chwarae chwaraeon fel pêl-droed a rygbi ond weithiau rydw i’n hoffi gêm o golff achos mae’n fy helpu i i ymlacio. Fy hoff hobi ydy cerddoriaeth. Rydw i’n hoff iawn o wrando ar fandiau a chantorion newydd.

What do you and Will have in common and how are you different? Maybe you like playing golf like Will, maybe not. The Welsh phrase for like Will is fel Will. The Welsh phrase for unlike Will is yn wahanol i Will.

Exercise

Talk about what your favourite sports and interests are in relation to what Will said in the above paragraph. In other words, say how you are fel Will and how you are yn wahanol i Will, eg:

  • Fel Will, dw i’n hoffi...
  • Yn wahanol i Will, fy hoff hobi i ydy...

Question

You are now going to read about Geraint’s hobby, football, and in particular about what he has to say about the price of season tickets. Before doing so, however, here are some key words to help you, but what do they mean? Link the words in the left-hand column with those in the right-hand column.

Now read what Geraint has to say.

Dw i wrth fy modd yn gwylio gemau pêl-droed ond, yn fy marn i, mae tocyn tymor yn costio llawer o arian. Dydw i ddim yn ennill cyflog mawr fel y chwaraewyr! , mae rhaid cael chwaraewyr da ennill pob gêm ac felly rhaid talu cyflog mawr iddyn nhw. Mae fy ffrindiau i’n gwylio pob gêm ar y teledu ond wylio’r gêm yn y stadiwm.

Question

Find the following expressions in the text:

  • In my opinion...

  1. Beth mae Geraint yn ddweud am bris tocyn tymor?
  2. Ydy Geraint yn ennill llawer o arian?
  3. Beth mae ffrindiau Geraint yn hoffi gwneud?
  4. Beth mae Geraint yn hoffi gwneud - gwylio pêl-droed ar y teledu neu fynd i gêm?

  • Wyt ti’n cytuno gyda Geraint? – Do you agree with Geraint?
  • Ydych chi’n cytuno gyda Geraint? – Do you agree with Geraint?
  • Wyt ti’n anghytuno? – Do you disagree?

  • Beth ydy eich barn chi? – What’s your opinion?

Now read what Claire says about attending football matches.

Dw i wrth fy modd yn mynd i wylio gemau pêl-droed ond mae’n iawn. Yn gyntaf, mae yn costio llawer o arian ac , mae rhaid talu am gostau teithio a’r bwyd! Mae tocynnau tymor gyda fy ffrindiau ond does dim tocynnau tymor gyda fy nheulu a fi achos maen nhw’n ddrud iawn. Dylai’r clybiau disgownt ond dydyn nhw ddim, ! Wedi dweud hynny, mae’r yn anhygoel! Mae’n pob ceiniog!
