Expressing opinions

If you wanted to discuss your opinions about something that you have read in a group discussion, you could ask a partner:

  • Beth ydy dy farn di am...? – What’s your opinion of...?
  • Beth wyt ti’n feddwl o...? – What do you think of...?

Similarly, you could ask a group:

  • Beth ydy eich barn chi am...? – What’s your opinion of...?
  • Beth ydych chi’n feddwl o...? – What do you think of...?

On the previous page, Sioned said that she didn’t like reality programmes. You could therefore use the above patterns to ask for someone else’s opinion, eg:

  • Beth ydy dy farn di am raglenni realiti? – What’s your opinion of reality programmes?
  • Beth wyt ti’n feddwl o raglenni realiti? – What do you think of reality programmes? etc

How would you answer if someone asked you for your opinion of reality programmes?

You could say:

  • Maen nhw’n… – They’re...
  • Mae rhaglenni realiti yn… – Reality programmes are...
  • Yn fy marn i, mae rhaglenni realiti yn… – In my opinion, reality programmes are...
  • Dw i’n meddwl bod rhaglenni realiti yn... – I think that reality programmes are...

If you wanted to develop the conversation further, you could ask some additional questions such as:

  • Pa fath o raglenni teledu wyt ti’n hoffi? – What kind of television programmes do you like?
  • Beth ydy dy farn di am raglenni chwaraeon? – What do you think of sports programmes?
  • Wyt ti’n hoffi rhaglenni cwis? – Do you like quiz programmes?
  • Beth wyt ti’n feddwl o...? – What do you think of...?
  • Beth wyt ti’n hoffi ar y teledu? – What do you like on television?

You could also agree or disagree with your partner using the following patterns:

  • Rydw i’n cytuno achos... – I agree because...
  • Rydw i’n anghytuno achos… – I disagree because...

Why not read again the piece that Sioned wrote? Comment on her opinion and then ask a partner or a group about their opinions of different types of television programmes.

In addition to the types of programmes already mentioned, here are a few more types of television programmes to help you:

In order to express opinion effectively, try to use a variety of appropriate adjectives as this will allow you to show off your language skills – using the adjective grêt over and over isn’t so great, for example, as it doesn’t allow you to showcase your vocabulary.
