Colourful start to yacht race
One of the murals created by the Liverpool schoolchildren
The Clipper fleets will be greeted with colourful banners
A mural produced by Liverpool schoolchildren is to mark the start of a worldwide event.

Thousands of children have created the banners for the Albert Dock for the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race.

The project was inspired by Muriel Simpson, whose husband Rod was the only Liverpudlian to sail the entire 35,000 miles in the 2001/2 race.

More than 200 schools have taken part in the mural makeover at the dock.

Mrs Simpson said: "The quality of the work is outstanding. The Albert Dock will look amazing when they are all up."

The Clipper fleet will be moored at the dock before the start of the race on 27 October.
