| Tuesday, 25 September, 2001, 16:43 GMT 17:43 UK Race yachts use engines ![]() Lack of wind has hit The Times Clipper 2000 race The eight yachts in The Times Clipper 2000 round-the-world race have been allowed to use their engines because of a lack of wind. The final leg of the race left Jersey for Portsmouth shortly before midday on Tuesday. Hundreds of people had turned out to watch the yachts - all sponsored by British communities. But light winds meant the boats barely moved - so the organisers decided to restart the leg from the island of Alderney, just of the coast of Normandy.
The race was scheduled to finish at Portsmouth on Wednesday morning. The Bristol and Jersey boats had battled it out for the overall lead on the gruelling 15th leg of the race, from New York to the Channel Islands. Last Thursday morning, the Bristol yacht was lying in seventh position, while Jersey's crew led a fleet of six that had picked up good winds off the Irish coast. But Bristol skipper Bob Beggs overhauled them all to finish the leg crucial section first, with Jersey in fourth place. Whichever of the two arrived in Jersey first was expected to emerge as the overall winner once points are tallied up back in Portsmouth. The Jersey crew still lies in second place on points. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
