Bristol clinches clipper victory
Bristol clipper wins
The Bristol crew had enough points to take victory
Bristol has won The Times Clipper 2000 round-the-world race.

She crossed Portsmouth Gunwharf Quays finish line at 1058 BST on Wednesday.

Crowds watched excitedly from Southsea Castle as the Jersey clipper crossed the finishing line at 1044 BST, closely followed by the rest of fleet.

Bristol finished third behind rivals Jersey and Liverpool in the final race from the Channel Islands to the British mainland.

Overall points
Bristol 97.4
Jersey 96
London 82
Liverpool 77
Plymouth 75
Portsmouth 72
Leeds 40
Glasgow 38

But her points total after the 11-month circumnavigation was enough to clinch the victory.

Bristol's skipper, Bob Beggs, will be presented with a 10,000 Waterford crystal trophy depicting the clipper yachts.

Eight yachts, each named after a place in the British Isles, set out on the race in October 2000.

The contest has been keenly fought, with the Bristol and Jersey boats jockeying for pole position during the 35,000-mile (56,327 kilometres) voyage.

The race was expected to finish on Friday but light winds in the north Atlantic resulted in slow progress for the fleet and a delay to the finishing time by five days.
