Pool closure may help Olympic bid
Swimming
There have long been calls in Aberdeen for a 50m pool
Closing Aberdeen's Bon Accord Baths could help the city's bid for an Olympic-sized swimming pool, it has been claimed.

A campaign has been started by swimmers who are angry that the art deco facility - Aberdeen's oldest pool - has fallen victim to council cutbacks.

However, Lib Dem councillor John Stewart has said closure could pave the way for an Olympic version instead.

He said it should have a "positive impact" on hopes for the pool.

Apply pressure

Mr Stewart said discussions over the years had shown Aberdeen had a large public pool availability compared with other areas.

He said: "It was made clear if we were going to argue for another we would have to take steps.

"It should have a positive impact on the pressure we are able to put on for a 50m pool."

One 79-year-old swimming enthusiast has launched a campaign in an attempt to save the Bon Accord Baths.

George Pettifer has launched a petition and is organising a rally.

He is also planning to protest around the city with a sandwich board.

The city council said it needed to close the pool because it was costing too much to run.
