There have been six road deaths already in Grampian in 2007

There have already been six deaths on the region's roads this year, after 62 in 2006.

Two teenagers died in Moray at the weekend, a pedestrian in Aberdeen and a motorist in Aberdeenshire.

Ch Insp Tom Forrester described the death toll as the worst possible start to the year and said: "There is a very fine line between life and death."

Friends Daniel Duczek, 17, from Forres, and Kayne Danvers, also 17, from Findhorn, died in a crash on the Forres to Grantown on Spey road on Friday night.

Nicholas Sim, 20, from Udny, died on the A920 at Pitmedden, also on Friday.

The fourth fatality was a male pedestrian who died early on Saturday after a collision involving a car on West North Street in Aberdeen.

Mr Forrester said: "These collisions at the weekend occurred on roads we would not normally be patrolling. They occurred on roads which don't have collision histories.

"The weather, as far as we are aware, does not appear to have been a factor although the roads were damp, as they usually are at this time of year.

"Our message to the public is clear. They must take account of the road conditions and circumstances and drive accordingly."
